EDCs--how much is too much?

Here's mine: on belt- leatherman wave (new style) and new Coast LED light
each in own sheath
clipped in pocket- BM mini-grip (plain edge)

At one point I geared up to the point that I could leave home for a week and need little more than a soft place to sleep. It got to be a real PITA, so I had to decide WHY I carried WHAT. I can't cut (or for that matter, shoot) with more than one tool at a time, so I ejected the gun/knife load, and decided on some small essentials:
A decent light
whistle
lighter
handkerchief
The obligatory Leatherman Squirt/Photon in the watch pocket.
And a good quality folder (Large Sebbie is my current favorite)

I still carry the man purse for the cell phone, glasses, PDA, first aid, etc., but for just walking around, the basics cover me up pretty well.

I keep refining my EDC, and what I carry now is pretty well thought through.

My carry consists of:
"Emergency" Folder: Always an Emerson SOCFK -- I keep this unused so that it has a sharp edge for whatever emergencies may arise. This is not limited to self defense.
General Use Folder: Currently Kershaw Whirlwind -- I need something for general use so that my emergency piece stays sharp. Right now the Whirlwind fills this slot.
Multitool: Currently Leatherman Sideclip -- Small and clips into the pocket.
Loaner: V'nox Tinker -- When someone asks to borrow a knife, they get this one. And I've come to love the small blade as a package opener.

In the last week I added a V'nox Signature II as an all-around backup.

I'd like to have a serrated folder but the only one I own is too large (Spyderco Endura). Eventually I'll add in either a Jester or Dragonfly. Dunno if it will replace a piece or be added in.

I could also see the need for a heavy-duty folder. I'd have no problem tucking a Strider in my waistband somewhere.

In the end it's all about how much you're comfortable with carrying. I have no problem carrying the above plus a 1911 and two spare mags. My trick for that is a good belt.

My EDC

right hand pocket
key chain with resusitation mask, SAK classic and mini LED light and whistle on it

left hand pocket
wallet

right back wallet
spyderco calypso PE

on belt
phone

right leg pocket
pens, pencils

left leg pocket
tissue

another pocket has rubber gloves and a few plasters in it

I can add a heavy duty kit when I expect to need better stuff inwhich case a swiss tool and streamlight twin task will appear on my belt

I tend to carry 3 or 4 most of the time. Whenever I carry 4, I feel like I should cut down; when I carry 3 it feels just about right. 3 covers each of the bases nicely: locking folder, SAK, and multitool.

the usual lineup is:

Spydie Military or Native (CPM-440v)
SAK alox farmer or huntsman plus
Swisstool X or Cybertool 41

When I really want to cut down, I'll go with a Victorinox Trekker and a multi....

slicer, prybar, multitool, chopper, throwing knives, random sak.

ive cut down to that now... seems about right for what i want it to do vs. things getting redundant. slicer/prybar/multitool (plus lighter) on belt, and the chopper/throwing knives/sak in bag.

so thats only 10 edged items on me at all times  (3 throwers, 2 blades in leatherman, and 2 in sak)

Actually I've whittled it down to a slipjoint and medium large lockblade, around home and 75 % of the above listed things including a FB.

I really love this kind of thread and I agree with Vincent that you also need to post in the other thread as it does serve as a repository of great info, and good reading.

When I read about some of you folks carrying the amount of items you carry...................I say more power to ya'! I rarely carry more than two folders but thats me and that is what I need/want to carry as it serves me well. I will carry a large single bladed folder in my right front pocket all by itself, no change or keys to interfere or to get wedged into it. In my left front pocket goes the change and a two bladed/three bladed slipjoint knife that probably handles 99% of what I need a knife to handle on a daily basis. Does this fact ever make me reconsider carrying the large folder???..........NOT at all!! I carry it with no problems to myself such as extra weight, bulky, unlawful, or a variety of other problems someone else may have. I just love to carry a well built, somewhat unique folding knife that some people will never get to see unless they see mine. Course, as with all of us knife freaks, there are VERY FEW people who understand the carrying or the cost of such an item!!

Btw, what am I carrying?? My large single blade model varies between these two; A Jeff Hall Phalanx, and a Rick Hinderer Firetac 165, my slipjoint of preference as of lately has been a Case two-bladed large Gunstock from the Case Brothers series. :D :D :D

Whether 5 is enough or 3 is too many is just personal choice. It depends on what you do, where you work, how you dress, how stable/unstable your environment seems to be, what you're comfortable with, etc., etc...

I generally have 3 basics with me: a Leatherman squirt (w/ scissors) on my key ring, a neck knife (either a neck p.e.c.k. or an inexpensive custom ground from a bandsaw blade), and a Leatherman Charge XTi. I got the XTi for Christmas. Before then it was always a folder, either a BM Grip. or a BM Stryker. (I kind of miss my folders sometimes!)

I suppose that a person's EDC does depend on your job, work environment, etc., so I don't really feel that awkward about my carry. Being a truck driver, there are many different cutting jobs/chores that arise and it's always better to be prepared than to lack the right tool for the job.

"Better to have and not need, than to need and not have." :D

My EDC is a Strider folder ( SnG or AR) and a Victorinox Huntsman. My Surefire rides along if it is nighttime. But usually, all I need is my Strider... ;)

Having had lites crap out in bad situations , I always carry a Streamlite Stylus with my pens , a Surefire de jour , a tool of some kind (Leatherman), and an emergency folder , these days usually a Benchmade 705 or 520 . If I'm dressed un it will be a Benchmade 960 or 77X .

I'll usually switch out the Centofante for a Kershaw Vapor or Gerber Paraframe when I go to work.
