EDCs that don’t do anything for you

CF scales, they look great, they are strong and light, I want to like CF, but after so many "this is the one " I have yet to find one that is more than eye candy.
I can’t disagree, I have a purty little number coming my way, and it’s not like anyone who spends money on CF scales actually hard uses them, and I don’t think that I will abuse mine either (he’s not going to be a safe king, but I’m not asking it to baton)

Sort of, pretty much any backlock puts me off. I love my Delica, and I want to get another Native, but every time I try to flick the knife and it doesn't go easy, or when I have to two-hand close it, my heart sinks a little.

Paramilitary 2. Have had mine for 3 years. I used it a bunch when I first got it, loved it, but the honeymoon ended fast.

Still have it and will carry it on the very rare occasion when I feel a small knife would be better for where I'm going.
I guess my old S30V Paramilitary 2 would fall into this category too. Don't get me wrong I loved that knife when I first got it and it's a great tool that's built exceedingly well, but when it comes to carrying it these days I would prefer to have one of my other knives in my pocket. It lost it's "wow" factor to me it seems. It went from 100% pocket time to 5% over the years.

Another one would be my ZT 0566. Liked it when it first arrived and now it literally never gets used.

I purchased a PM2/s30v/black on black from the forum awhile back. Always heard a ton of good things about it, and I thought that I needed to finally give one a try. Great feeling knife in hand (good ergos, well built, nice lock, etc.). Carried it a couple times. Maybe cut some paper... then continued reaching for my well used Manix 2 instead... Probably a great knife, just not for me (or I need to try a different blade steel or para 3...).

Will probably end up moving it on soon, along with the next one:

Lots, really. I'll give one example though. Kershaw Leek. I bought one for my wife. She doesn't like the assisted open, so it reverted back to me. There is nothing wrong with it. Well made, takes a good edge, has a versatile blade shape. Just doesn't "click" for me. I won't go into a lengthy analysis of why, just that the particular design doesn't fit into any knife niche I have.

I picked up a Leek off of the exchange as well, for similar reasons to that PM2. Heard great things about it. Seems like one of the "old go to EDC options". In addition, this one had Elmax, which I had always wanted to try... and then I had the same exact feeling about this knife, which is odd, because I like all of the individual things about it. I like the wharnie blade shape, elmax is nice, size fit the bill.... but there is just something about it that I end up going with another knife in the same size every time (delica, etc.). I think in the end, I dislike the assisted opening and slippery feeling of the scales... it just doesn't "fit" my hand and carry. Shame, because it seems like it should be a great knife, and it is... just not for me I guess...

Manix 2 for me.
Everyday work knife.
Gift from a good friend.
I consider it one of Spydercos best designs for a working folder but I can't stand carrying it.

Yet, I carry it everyday. Reminds me what great friends I have every time I look at it.

Had opposite feeling with this one. Seems like it should be too bulky for standard EDC...takes up a lot of pocket space... not super sleak/refined... And I carry that $%^&ing thing nearly every day :D

I absolutely love knives like this, Hear me out.

As Knife folks, we tend to pick knives apart, find what we do like and don't, find subtle nuances that others would not notice...

Knives like this allow us to handle a knife and get a feel for how the majority of the populace (that isn't fearful) view knives.
Nothing special, doesn't do anything for us but cut what it is that needs cutting. This knife is the same to you as a screwdriver may be to your wife; she doesn't care if a #2 bit is the correct bit and that a #1 may strip the head, a screwdriver is a screwdriver, nothing more, nothing less.

This is the case with you and this knife. It cuts and it gets used. Nothing more, nothing less.

Now, the reason I love knives like this is that when I am done with it, and go back to one of my preferred carry knives, I can notice the difference. Just the fact that I notice, and appreciate the difference between the two is why I love them.
This is why i have an Amazon wishlist with my preferred gift knives. I do this because 1. I’m not going to tell a non-knife person to go to a knife website that they’re not comfortable with and 2. I have vetted all of these knives for my needs (although I didn’t really account for price changes over time). I remember getting a faux SAK from my brother before I was into knives and just dulling the blade. Now I feel stupid because it’s one more knife purchase I don’t want to make, and more importantly, it hurts when you just destroy a gift from a loved one

This is a good idea, but I would be a little leery of getting one of the "near-perfect" fakes for some of the most popular knives (e.g. PM2, Delica, Grips, etc.).

On the native, it is SO BORING, even though it is now a financially better option than the delica (I’ll make a post about my opinion another time). But if you love your delica from a cutting aspect, having a backlock shouldn’t stop you from having fun. Making it deploy faster through wave mods or making it smoother by applying oil are the two basic recommendations that I can think of now. As for two handed closing, if the blade doesn’t drop when shaken (once the lock is disengaged), look up how to close it one handed, and that is mostly about how comfortable you are with the blade close to your body (just the dull spine though).

Our tastes mature as our knowledge base increases and that's just normal. I am sure that if you go out and buy a new car today it will be drastically different than when you were 18.
When I started collecting I of course had to have every Kershaw and CRKT that I could get my hands on. Now I have only one Kershaw which is the Blur Tanto which I will always keep aside from the Blur the knives that used to excite me don't even get a second look.

That’s the type of thinking I try to stick with when I talk to people about knives. Not everyone will look at a knife quite like we do.

My father in law bought a few knives from a gun show very recently and was showing them to me the other day. They looked good aesthetically and felt real good in the hand. But when I was looking for a brand on the blade two of them had stamped in “Pakistan”. Another was a assisted open Elk Ridge. My inner knife knut was definitely put off from the paki blades but because of the joy the my FIL was expressing about his finds I decided it wasn’t info that was pertinent to any part of the moment.

My Endura 4 and my Native 5. Both nice knives, but I just don’t like backlocks.

I carry them both as the Native 5 is my only fully serrated knife and I like the size of the Endura, but I own a dozen or so knives I like more.

Happy problem to have choices though.

First two times I read that, I thought it said "fight". I love my mild dyslexia, makes life more interesting. .

I read it wrong also; didn't look again until I read your post. Ignorance is bliss.

Sebenza. I've owned a few. Different handle designs. Well-built. I've tried to like them. But they just don't do it for me. I find them quite boring. So I sold mine.

I hear you. They aren't for everybody, and I'm one of those folks they just ain't for.

My uncle got me this damned thing:
Smith--Wesson-Razor-Two-Blade-Pocket-Knife.jpg

Does nothing for me, but ol' Unc gave it to me so I'm gonna carry it 'til it falls apart. Probably outlast me.

"Probably outlast me"
And there in lies the beauty
Personally I think your uncle has exquisite taste

So does he. ;)

:D This exchange made me laugh.

As for me - I have passed along any EDC that wasn't. However, my sister gave me a knife for my birthday a few years ago. I didn't even know that she knew I was a knifeknut.

This one - A HOFFMAN RICHTER - spring assisted opener, weighs about 10oz. - seems like 2 lbs. AND - it's "unbreakable". Sell for over $ 100.00 on The River but less than $ 20.00 in the Bay.

Doesn't do anything for me but I can't get myself to get rid of it (or use it )

Yikes, what a "knife" Oh well...

For me, it's the Benchmade 940 models. I don't like anything about them. The design, the blade shape, the absurd cost, I've just never been a fan. However, I know that those who like them, really like them. I just don't. Another well-loved fan favorite is the Kershaw Skyline. Just don't like them. The good thing is that there are countless other knife designs, so there's really something for everyone.
