Edge Damage

I have a Delica4 in VG10 (not ZDP189), and one day I just took it out of my pocket and open it to see there was a nick in the blade. Its really bugging me, and I have no idea what's caused it. I haven't used it in about 3-4 days, but it just appeared there. (I had been edcing my UKPK in between then).

I have no skill sharpening, so how can I get rid of the edge damage? It looks like the edge was rolled or something.

Thanks.

I have no idea what caused it, sounds wierd, like somebody took it for a spin while you were gone maybe. But sending it back to spyderco would be a good idea to get the nick sharpened out. Or you would find one of the many on this forum to do it for you. Maybe Tom Krein, richard j or the like.

IMO VG-10 is a soft steel, dosen't take much to damage the edge. Even cutting things like cardboard can do some heavy damage. If you have never sharpened before I would suggest learning, its just another part of knive ownership.

Contact me if you would like you delica fixed I'll give ya a good deal.

I wouldnt classify VG10 as soft at all. I slammed mine onto a concrete warehouse floor and had no real damage.

 VG-10 is 58-59 Rc IIRC. That's not soft like say AUS-8.

Cardboard doing heavy edge damage? Maybe if you're using a 420JS and the cardboard is impregnated with rock....

Probably dinged it on something. Buy a sharpmaker and start with the corners of the brown rods. Shouldn't be hard to sharpen out.

VG-10 is good stuff, its defo not "soft" and has good wear resistance too from my experiences with it.

As to the OPs problem, it could be there was a bit of crud in the knife and the blade snaped shut on it or something ?
Or as mentioned maybe it was done for you by an unhelpfull friend.

Ok maybe soft was the wrong word but its not as good as S30V like everyone seems to say. I'm not saying its not good I carry my Endura and Delica regularely but when edge damage does occure its more visible and in the form of a roll or small chip/nick.

Carry a UKPK or Sage and see what kind of edge damage you get then.

Honestly I've never had "edge damage" from routine normal use of my knifes. Flipped my CRKT M21SF-G on some tile floor pretty hard and it just rolled the edge a bit. Course, that's 8Cr13MoV (AUS-8 comparable).

For most users the difference between S30V and VG-10 is negligable. Unless you're a knut you won't notice the difference. Hell my coworkers have trouble telling the difference between ATS-34 and S30V.

I was thinking the same thing as Haze; my guess would be some crap in the handle and you closed the blade on it. Even at that tho, it took me 'waveing' my vg10 delica into a metal table at work to put a small chip in the edge.:o

Oh well, a nick isn't the end of the world- just a good chance to learn how to sharpen :D

Actually, I've had a similar problem with my Endura 4. I'm definitely not trying to slam Spyderco or anything (I own 15 of them) but I've had the Endura for about a year now and it's had a fair amount of cutting time. I haven't cut anything harder than cardboard or pine branches with it though and every time I sharpen it on the Sharpmaker I notice more and more small chips along the edge. Yesterday, I noticed a small crack about a centimeter from the tip, 2 MM starting from the edge going towards the spine. I wouldn't consider myself a sharpening expert or anything but I've had the sharpmaker for 3 years now and have had zero problems sharpening any of my other Spyderco's, Kershaw's, Benchmade's, etc with it. I emailed Spyderco earlier today and I let you know what I find out.

I had a problem with an E4W where the tolerances were slightly off, allowing the edge to impact the backspacer when closed. This caused a small flat spot on the edge that would reappear soon after I'd sharpened it out. I contacted Spyderco and they replaced it. This is the photo I emailed to Spyderco showing the spot on the backspacer that was contacting the edge:

You might want to check if yours has the same problem.
