Edge Grind vs. Sharpmaker

Am I the only one to notice that the edge grind on many of the Syderco knives (and other manufacturers as well) is about 10 degrees off from the Sharpmaker? My Sharpmaker is about 40-45 degrees from vertical. However, all my Spydercos have an edge that's more like 30 degrees.

This makes it very difficult to resharpen the knives since it take a lot of work to rebevel the edge with the new angle. It comes out sharp as heck in the end, but takes to long to get there. What can you say about this--is there a solution?

Also, with even the slightest amount of side pressure, I can't keep the tip from draging across the ceramic on the downward stroke from back to tip. This dulls the point and drives me crazy since I can't seem to resharpen the tip.

Ekaagan - The factory grind on the Spyderco knives should be less than the inclusive angle on the Sharpmaker. Usually about 10 degrees less, which should make it easier to sharpen the edge. Rebevelling shouldn't be necessary. which model are you having trouble with?

If you want to keep a "pointy point" rather than a "rounded point", you will have to stop the sharpening stroke while still on the stone. (Can only be done on the flat side). Do not "fall" off the radius. Although we have found that the "rounded point" might be more effective and stronger.
