Good evening everyone

I went ahead and ordered an Edge Pro Apex. I ordered the one that comes with 120, 220, 400, 600, and 1000 grit, Stones. I think this will be a good start on getting some good haircutting edges. I’ve owned one in the past so I’m pretty familiar with how to use it although it’s been years and I will need to brush up.

Looking forward to it being shipped and receiving this little gem.

Nice to hear there is still a bit of sanity left in the world .
Some times less is more .
I COULD NOT want edges better than I get off these and from almost day one .
As you probably already know a stone thickness compensator is very useful . Do get a good quality "screw driver" for it . Not all are metric . 2.5mm or 3/32 .
The stops with the thumb wheel sucks . I have returned to using Drill Stop Collars .

PS : more and more stones are leaving the various factories not flat . Check every one BEFORE trying to sharpen something , otherwise they will drive you crazy . High price does not guarantee it will be flat .

If you care about not putting blemishes on the sides of your knives see this video at about 9:40 .
The entire vid is great too but the clear box tape is seriously effective . Mind you don't get too close to the edge with the tape and get glue on your stones .
Trial and error to start ; you know .

You can accomplish the same thing as the drill stop collar with an angle cube. So there are options. I have both...but haven't used the EP in quite some time. I am considering using it again since it's left permanently set up alongside my shop sink seeking attention.

I'd recommend the magnet. Probably not to everyone's liking but it made it far easier for me. Makes it far less fiddly to work with. If yours doesn't come with it, I think some do now.

And I only have one of the diamond stones so far but WHAT AN UPGRADE and it will not be my last.

EP did a test to see if they should offer magnets with 4 people. 2 liked them, 2 did not, so much for consensus. The magnet and slide guide kind of go together, and certainly help stabilize the blade.

I always have to remind myself so much in life is subjective and I can be super opinionated. But I HATED that sharpener before adding the magnet. It was such a pain to work with trying to hold the blade and work the stone back and forth and keep even pressure without wobbling the blade. I watched how to videos making it look so easy that had me screaming at the ceiling for not grasping what I was doing wrong. As is I still prefer to only use full flat grinds and no saber or hollow grinds unless they really lock in place with the magnet. Big kitchen knife like a chef knife? Super fast. Buck 112? Fugedaboutit. For me. I'm sure there's someone out there that has mastered this art.

So of course I try to sharpen my Griptilan on it with a new stone I've never used before. Derp. Finally got it to work and it got crazy sharp but won't use it on that saber grind again. Put the Para 2 LW on it and it now has a screaming sharp edge on it from using it to trim branches while I was cleaning gutters. Because why climb down the ladder and get the right tool when you have a knife in your pocket??? That BD1N had no chance....

The trick is to use your hand to hold the knife in place, and the stone to hold it down against the table. I do find that even with magnets table style guided sharpeners either struggle or don't work for any knives without a flat surface to reference. I am not aware of one style of sharpener that works for everything I need to sharpen.

I tried the magnets and then took them back off . It has been so long ago I forget why .
I have an angle cube . Futzed with it some . Drill stop collar is so easy can do it with my eyes closed . Once it is set for the first stone .

For me it's the issue of being very much right handed and very much not left handed. As soon as I flip the blade over and can't hold the handle with my left hand it gets difficult to manage. I get one side about perfect and one side slightly convex edged at best. The magnet helps me be less awkward as long as the magnet has a solid hold on it like with a full flat grind.
