are no longer available.:( Too bad, they were fast cutting, like when you need to reprofile a very dull knife. Oh, the 120 grit is called "course" but don't come close to the cutting speed of the old. ( I did a side by side test of them both)
CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHERE I CAN GET A REALLY FAST CUTTING STONE?
:( :( :(

The reason I have an Edge Pro is to sharpen a knife really fast, I don't plan to hack on a knife all day to get it sharp.

gull_wing,

Ben Dale from EdgePro is always interested in feedback on how the stones perform. If you haven't already done so, consider calling him and talking with him about it.... he might be able to help you out.

The DMT XX coarse cuts extremely fast, it makes reprofiling even steels like ZDP 189 and S30V a breeze. I highly recommend it.

Try googling "DMT D8XX" or "DMT D6XX" for the 6 inch and 8 inch XX bench stones, respectively.

Try 1 sharp knife. I think they have it for under $60, which is a good deal. Not sure of their exact address, but do a google search and you should find it.

I thought the 120 cut fast enough. Then I lapped it on a 220 grit DMT. After that it felt more like a 220 grit. Very annoying. :grumpy:

Recently I lapped it on the patio slab. Now it feels more like its original condition. :)

Are you looking for an EdgePro sized stone or any size that will hog off metel?

While I can understand wanting to stay Edge Pro sized to stay with that system, the DMT XX Coarse proved itself to me again by literally taking only a few minutes of Murray Cater style back and forth sharpening to take my Spyderco Native 3 (VG-10) from 15 per side to 10 per side, all the way down to the edge. I held the angle by propping the stone up to my desired angle (I have a cheap angle reader that you sit on the stone from Home Depot to check the angle), and it just blew right through the steel to the edge. I then refined the edge by using the same style stroke on my DMT Fine stone, and then moved on to my 15 per side microbevel with my Spyderco Benchstones. If you just went straight to your coarsest Edge Pro stone after using the DMT XX Coarse you would quickly have your nice, even edge pro bevels again, and all signs of the DMT XX Coarse would be gone, and you would have reprofiled your knife in very quick order.

I never have any issues using the 120 grit stone. Its worked well on anything I've tried it on to date. I never saw the older ones though so not having that to weigh it against is the difference maybe but my point is the 120 will do the job.

STR,
I respect your word.
And in that respect I will say, the two are like night and day. The "old" just bites aggressivly into any steel.

I thought you where talking about the 120 grit course stone they currently have for sale. The one that came with my kit wore out and I've been waiting on getting a new one. After reading your post (not very closely:o ), I went and ordered three from knife outlet, thinking they would be quickly sold out! LOL

Pictures? :D

Do you have any knives with thick edges left in your house? ;)

The good samaritan who gave me the Native 3 me wants pics (thanks again for the knife, BTW)! I will get some up soon. The Native 3 is one of the few hollow grinds where I used restraint and didn't go flat to the stone, so the finish is still good, it just has wider bevels. 15 per side is just too axe like for me (at least with VG-10), I get sudden urges and compulsions to the point where when I see edges that thick, the D8XX comes out and obliterates the edges into nice, acute edges in short order. I think the only thick edged knives left in my house are the kitchen knives, which were very cheap and have Cold Steel like serrations. The D8XX could turn them to PE in no time, but I don't feel like wasting the time on them.
