Edge pro dilemma

So here we go. don't know if anyone is following this thread any more. But here goes. Thanks to all that gave me some input. I made the decision today and bought a new apex and a scissors attachment from Ben at Edge Pro. Really enjoyed talking to him on the phone. we talked for a good while about what I'm going to do to mount the scissors attachment to the apex. I have been a machinist for years and have played with some cabinet making, so this should be interesting. I have the skills, but haven't even seen an Edge Pro yet. Should be here in a week as it takes a while to get here from Oregon. Certainly am glad I didn't end up with an EZE sharp or a Wicked edge or an electric sharpener. I looked at all of them, but the advice I received on this website was of sooooo much help. On another note,Ben was shocked when I told him there was a top of the line professional model (the one that costs 575) on Ebay this weekend. According to him, that's really rare. Too bad I was bidding against a pro. He placed his winning bid 1 second... can you believe it... one second before the close of the bid. -Gary

Good luck Gary. I think you will love it.

What did Ben Dale say about mounting the scissors attachment on an Apex?

And, let us know how that goes.

I'm really interested in how you like it! Too bad you didn't get the pro - then if you didn't like it, I could have bought it from you! :D

Thanks for the replies. I will let you know what happens with the scissors attachment as soon as I get the thing. Being a teacher, I've got plenty of spare time (at the moment) and will get right after it. I've been planning on designing something that the average Joe can use to mount Edge Pro's scissors attachment to an apex, but time will tell. Ben was telling me that there's a number of ways to do what I'm hoping to do, and was working on sending me a picture of another idea he had, but was unable to get the his iPhone to hook up to his office (I think it was the office) computer to download the pics. He was going to try the home computer... but you know how technology can be for most of us. Again, time will tell. But anyway, I've always enjoyed engineering, and though I don't hold an engineering degree, I've designed and built a whole lot of fixtures in my time. 20 years of working in shops where we had to hold on to something so we could grind or mill it forces ya to figure out a way to get it done. So maybe I can use my skills to design something here. We'll see. I'll try, that much I know.

You will love it,i reprofiled a strider to day in a few minutes the edges are perfect, i guess a 10,
Punisher,
I hope you're right. I know it wasn't cheap. By the way, When you said a "10," were you referring to... on a scale of 1-10, or a 10 degree angle?

Sodak,
The online edge Pro professional model ended up selling for 385 or so. Just in case you were curious. And since you're interested, maybe you need to be the next one to do some shouting on this website that you bought and edge pro too???

Gary jp4,
He said a number of things, an idea or two of how to mount it to an Apex, and another idea of how to mount it to a plain wood block. It's too hard to describe here, but I just need to see it to answer your question with any justice. Should get it next Tuesday the 28th of July. And as long as the Rays win, I'll be in a good mood, and will get right on it. Watch for a future post.

Good for you, Gary! You'll come to love it, trust me. FWIW, I just made a leather strop for my EP. I got a piece of smooth hard leather from a local shoe repair shop, the kind for soles, and mounted it to a stone blank. I charged it with green compound from Sears.... I know, I know, but it's about 1/2-mile away and I couldn't wait for the stuff from Lee Valley so I got it. :) Wow! What a difference! I've been able to get my knives sharp but now they're sharp. I'm thinking of making another EP strop to use with the HF1 compound I got from Pop's. Well, I resisted as much as possible but it looks like I finally have contracted the ultima-sharpacaiea disease! :D

a 10 on a scale perfect,it is a tanto so i am sharping two edges on the same side trying to make them meet it was great the edge is better or as good as factory...........

Post 13 on this thread.

THE HAPPY ENDING... The Edge Pro Apex arrived two days ago. I asked Ben Dale to send me the scissors attachment which is not designed for the Apex model, and spent a few hours designing an adapter for it. Yesterday, I made the adapter, mounted it on the Apex, and have been sharpening away ever since. The EP works even better than I imagined, the scissors attachment slips on and off in about 2 minutes, and i am one happy camper. My thanks to all those that provided the feedback on this thread to help me make this decision. One little problem. I ran out of knives to sharpen and every pair of scissors is as sharp as the factory edge. On second thought, they're sharper. Anyway, now what am I gonna do?

now you're gonna start noticing how many friends and family members have dull knives and shears, after I sharpened everything in the house I just left the apex out for touch ups.

Now I carry it around in the car just in case someone needs their blade to go from dull to razor sharp.

Touchups will happen, and you might start tinkering with different degrees on your knives/machetes/hatchets etc.

Congratulations!

Now, sharpen all of your friends' knives for free! :p Then when you need a favor, you can call it in! :D

Not sure if this would be OK with the people who monitor this website, or with Ben Dale of Edge Pro. Want to be a help, but want to do what's right. Any advice out there?

Not sure how to do this. Would like to attempt to send a pic or two of the Apex scissors adapter that I made. Spoke to Ben at Edge Pro on the phone today and he gave me his blessing to share this. However, I can't seem to figure out how to attach a pic to this post. Perhaps I can send it to anyone that would ask me to do so by shipping it to your regular email address. At this point, it's the best I can do.
