Edge Pro?

Thanks QuietOned. I don't expect to have a high volume of knives to sharpen (just my handful every now and then), and am wondering if there's any benefit to the extra cost of the Pro over the Apex. The scissor thing is another factor. I don't have any "fancy" scissors, but wonder if it might be worth the extra bucks now (cry once) to have that capability. What do you think?

There is a big price difference the Apex from 1sharpknife goes for 185$ with a spare mounted 120 grit stone.

The complete Pro package available only from Edge Pro - Kit # 3 goes for 485$ and you will need to buy an extra 120 grit stone - Mounted or Unmounted. You can also buy the Apex directly from EP at 190$ and it doesn't include the extra mounted 120 grit stone.

Is the Pro worth the extra 300$.... that's the question only you can answer. For me it definitely has been. For me the Pro paid for itself in less than a week just sharpening scissors. Also there are feel differences to the Pro over the Apex. Some ppl find the Apex too light. Others find the Pro too heavy duty of a unit. I find that the Pro is more stable for me.

Only you can decide which is right for your needs and uses.

Note prices shown do not include shipping.

I have the Pro model with the scissor attachment and I love it. One of the best investments I've ever made. I bought mine from Ben Dale himself at the Oregon knife show in Eugene a few years back, and started sharpening knives and scissors for guys I work with. Other people found out by word of mouth that I sharpen, and now I have more sharpening jobs than I can handle. It took about 2 months for the machine to pay for itself as business was building. I always guarantee 100% satisfaction with my edges, and I've never had one come back yet. I have nothing but praise for Ben's little invention.

Every time I see an EdgePro thread I have to chime in:D. I've been searching for years for a good sharpening system and when I came back here about a year ago I searched for knife sharpeners and found that the EdgePro was very popular as with the Spyderco Sharpmaker. Well I bought the EdgePro Pro kit and the Sharpmaker and I am very happy with both. If I want to get a keen edge and back to the factory edge angle I go with my EdgePro. For touch ups and quick general sharpening I go with the Sharpmaker. But by far, I've been very happy with my EdgePro. I guess that's why you don't see many EdgePro systems on sale on eBay or the B/S/T forums because the owners are very happy with them. I opted to get the diamond stones for the EdgePro because it really works fast on metal when I need/want to remove metal quickly and easily. I must admit I also bought the diamond triangles for the Sharpmaker, too. But the EdgePro gets the most workout.

Is $126 (US) shipped a good price for a new Edge Pro Apex with this included:

4 stones (600, 320, 220 & 120 grits)
Water bottle
Sharpening guide
Cleaning cloth
Carrying case
Instructional DVD
8" Ceramic steel & case
Polishing tape mounting blank
Polishing tapes
3000 grit Polishing Tape

Thanks in advance.

WARNING!!! ebayers take note!!!

As I suspected, this was a scam. Someone sent me an ebay-spoof second chance email on the Edge Pro, offering to sell it to me at my last highest bid because the winner backed out for "personal reasons". I eventually contacted the ebay seller through ebay's message system and confirmed that no second chance offer was sent by the real seller.

Here are the clues that this was a scam. Take heed so you don't get burned.

1. although the email looked like a real email from ebay, it came only to my email address and NOT to my "my ebay" message box.

2. looking at the bid history I saw there were other bidders who bid more than I did who didn't win. Why would a second chance be sent to a bidder who wasn't 2nd highest or even 3rd highest.

3. when I told the bogus seller that I'd do the transaction but only through ebay he said fine. In a later email he said he was in Romania and would have to do it through ebay.uk website (and sent more spoof email purportedly from that website).

4. although he agreed to do the transaction through ebay and paypal, he later told me his paypal account was temporarily unavailable. He made up some bullsh!t reason why, trying to make it sound legit.

5. he tried to play on human nature, saying he had THREE Edge Pro Apex's and would combine shipping and sell all 3, shipped, for $275. He stated that although he was in Romania the sharpeners were located in US and would ship through ebay.

6. he asked for personal info (name, address), claiming he needed that to begin the ebay transaction process.

7. he disappeared after I asked him how this would be processed through paypal if his account was temporarily unavailable.

He was good and tempting, but not good enough. Be careful. He used the publicly available bid history on ebay to do this.

BTW, the real seller told me he only had the one Edge Pro, and the deal didn't fall through.

FYI

PS: I notified ebay's fraud address early on, asking if this was a legit 2nd chance offer. Three days have gone by and nothing from ebay but the automated "we got your inquiry" email.

A lot of good info in this thread, including the link to 1sharpknife and that offer of the Apex system with the extra 120 grit stone.

Anybody want to take a guess what I just did? :D

Argued with me and Fixer27? :p

I have an EdgePro Apex. It's one of those systems where even if you don't doubt your handskills, it'll do the job quicker and with less unintentional steel removal.

www.1sharpknife.com not only stocks the Apex for a good price, but also has a tips page which is very valuable. As with all tips for the EdgePro, search out posts here and at knifeforums.com and benchmadeforums.com from Nosmo, MeDoctor, and QuietOneD (aka QuietOne at knifeforums). They've done the time and crime with this device and share their knowledge.

Well, yeah, but no argument in the political forum has ever cost me $195. :D

I've checked out the tips pages and I saw some of your tips there. They strike me as being a bit "technical". I'm sure they are going to make more sense when I have the apex set up in front of me. I can't wait for it to come.

I went with the Apex (with the extra 120g stone) because of the more moderate price and good reviews. I'm going to be retiring from my 9 to 5 in about three years and maybe, if I turn out to be a good hand with the Edge Pro systems, I'll pick up a Pro system and do some sharpening work (writing off the cost of the Pro as a business expense, of course).

I've done a few crimes with the EP, like... cutting a file to fit, Don't attempt this unless you have a diamond saw, time, and patience and be prepared to replace the cutting wheel when you're done with one file! Cutting various cheap stones and cementing these to stone blanks, ordering stones from all over the place (none have been good enough to replace the standard EP stones) Trying to cut Japanese water stones to fit, many will just disintegrate during cutting. Cutting EP stones to half size so I'd have a full complement of grits for the half size stone blanks. Like I get so many knives that are drastically curved that I need too, besides which most re-curved blades just chamfering the edges of the standard stone a bit is all you ever need.

Further crimes... well leather on polish blanks, molded risers out of bondo, diamond spray on paper strips on polish blanks, trying 15 brands of glue sticks looking for a easier way to glue papers down, looking for a better paper, buying a box of overhead transparencies when I don't own a overhead projector. The worst crime....

Telling my wife I bought diamonds and they'd be here next week. When she found out it was in syringes in a heavy goop. Well we won't go into that...

The tips on 1SharpKnife are invaluable to all EP users. Even if you don't use an EP many can help the hand sharpener as well.

Just got back from the P.O., your Edge Pro is enroute.

You're 100% right, the tips seem technical, but once you use it a bit, and reread them, they'll make sense. Of course, not all apply to everyone, but as you use it, you'll find most of them useful in certain situations.

Have fun!!
