To help in producing a flat edge, a set of accurate degrees wedges are included with the ERU. The degree wedges come in 8-10-12-14-15-16-17-18-20. This makes putting a "flat" edge on you knife easy and quite accurate. Using the ERU in combination with the degree wedges and your stone or plate makes producing and maintaining a flat edge not only possible, but easy and reproducible.
Makers who use the Bubble Jig to sharpen, establishing a flat edge on the platen area, can then follow the belt made edge with an ERU set at a corresponding angle. There are quite a few makers that are using this technique to produce the edges on there newly built knives. It is extremely accurate and can be used to reproduced and maintain the desired edge.

The "flat edge" is IMHO the easiest edge to establish and maintain with this simple equipment and easy technique.

Post any comments you might have, always glad to hear from other makers, Fred

The ERU comes with a full set of sharpening wedges, shown in the photo. Use these degree wedges to establish a "flat" edge bevel before switching to the ERU to finish the edge. Truly flat edges can be profiled and set in very short time using a diamond plate or a water or oil stone followed by removal of the wire edge with the ERU. Once an edge is made flat its easy to maintain with the ERU super "V" sharpener.

Its a great tool to use to find the actual edge angle of your knife as well as keeping the edge sharp

The ERU field sharpener is the most precise sharpener on the market today. infinitely adjustable between 12 and 40 degrees and it fits in the palm of your hand.

They come with an alignment pin, a set of 8 degree wedges to use with your sharpening stone or diamond plate, to help in producing a truly flat edge, along with a hand stitched leather sheath.

This precision tool is for sale on our website ERU

Take time to watch the DVD, I think it explains pretty well, how it works and why it works so well. You would never believe a "V" style sharpener could do what this tool does.

Send me a PM if interested. I ship next day. The website is just about ready to post on line, watch for us.

Mine came the other day.
Well packed with all the things needed to make it easy to use. The DVD explains what isn't intuitive.

I had participated in the original product testing of this device, and the improvements from the prototype are good. If you go where a set of stones or a belt grinder isn't going to be available, this will be the thing to take. Additionally, it will be just the right tool to touch up an edge during game dressing or filleting fish anywhere. I think the non-knifemaker folks can finally buy a knife with a good edge and keep it shaving sharp with an ERU.

Don't even think of comparing this to one of those small "key chain" carbide sharpeners or mini-crock stix fobs. There is no comparison. The ERU is to one of those as a TW-90 is to an HF1X30.

The above is my real feelings. Fred knows that I am not a huge fan of gadgets and jigs. These devices rarely take the place of learned skills. I have probably $10,000 in sharpening tools and supplies. I bough one of these ( yep, I paid the same price as everyone else) because it works when those big boy toys aren't with me. I put this right in the car. Next time I am at a friend's home for dinner and the knives need a touch up to carve a roast...out the ERU will come.

Final note. Grinding bevels and sharpening problems are where most new makers get disgusted and quit. I have seem pretty knives with lousy grinds, and good grinds with terrible edges. Fred's Bubble jig and now the ERU are two tools that will help anyone from novice to pro make and maintain superb bevels and edges. Neither will replace practice and skill ( and are not intended to). Both will make learning those skills faster and the results much more consistent.

Fred, any thoughts on replacing the carbide inserts with diamond.Similar to diamond files.I own 2 ERU's and use them often, but many people have issues with carbide.

We have looked into diamond but so far have not found a product that is suitable. We are looking at boron nit-ride as well and it seems more feasible; the Moh's scale is 9.3 for the BN.

The tungsten carbide inserts that we use are "C2" grade. We use this grade because it has the best abrasion resistance. These inserts are rated @ 91.8 HRA and 9. on the Moh's, diamond being a 10.

I have two of the ERU's I keep as test units and have used them over a three year period. I've found very little sign of wear; I believe much of this is due to the fact that the disc are constantly being rotated giving different degree settings, therefor the contact area is always changing This keeps regional wear to a minimum. I offer a lapping service, where I will re-lap the surfaces of the tungsten carbide inserts if its needed. No takers so far.

If we do add other abrasives to the line we will keep the original TC as well.

I don't know about you, but I have learned a great deal about edges and sharpening and how to maintain them by using an ERU. I create better edges than I have ever achieved over a 25 year span.

Thanks for your input.

Regards, Fred

Fred,
I received my ERU haven't used it much with having ,so much going on during the holidays. But, I can tell you this it is very well made it renews the edge perfectly. And I would advise my customers who are not sharpening savvy to purchase this device. I think your doing a great job keep coming up with your great ideas and you will always have a supporter here. I wish a Happy and Prospers New Year for you and yours.

Thank again,
C.Bryan Gonzalez
