Edge Retention of Murray Carter Wharncliffe Neck Knife

Mr.Stamp, thank you for the sharing.Do you have any idea about why Japnese heat treat their knives so hard?My experience is limited in their traditional friction folder and quite positive, but I just can't figure out the reason of the high hardness on the big knives.

I hear Kliff Stump has a lot-o experience hacking at the Bamboo Forests of Newfoundland.

They don't vary the hardness from the small to the large knives, you will find even large bowies (10-14" blades) with edges up to 65 HRC. This gives the finest possible edge and the greatest edge retention - assuming you don't chip the edge. In general japanese wood working tools are very fragile compared to western ones but will cut with much less force, it is a very different mindset on optomization of purpose.
