I did the brass rod test on a skinner that I am pretty much finished with. It did mostly fine. There were a couple of places on the edge that dimpled a bit (I may have been pressing too hard). No area chipped. I put the final edge on. I was able to push cut phone book paper to problem. I started cutting up a bunch of cardboard. A couple of boxes including a fairly thick corrugated box that carried a couple of 1 gallon milk containers. The knife zipped righ through the cardboard really well.

I then went back to phone book paper. It cut it ok, but did tear some. I stropped it a bit and was able to push cut the phone book paper again.

I did the HT in a 2 brick forge. eoes this sound like an acceptable result or does this sound to you like the edge is too soft?

Any details on the HT procedure? What steel? What were your expectations?

Duh... Thank you! Aldo's 1084, I tried Stacy's recipe for normalizing (even though I am doing stock removal and most likely don't need it) and HT. refine grain and normalize -
heat to 1500F
heat to 1350F ( just non-magnetic)
heat to 1200F ( still magnetic)

Austenitize-
heat to 1500F

I also tempered for (2) 2 hour cycles at 400 degrees (verified with oven thermometer). I was expecting about a 60 hRC...
