Edge Thickness after Heat Treat

I recently heat treated a 1/4" 1095 blade with an edge thickness of 1 mm. I am have since grinded it down to about .7 mm (after heat treat) and I would like to know how much more I should go before I place an edge on the blade. According to David Boye's book "Step by step Knifemaking" he takes his blade to about .024"-.028" in thickness at 1/4" from the cutting edge.

I am having a hard time measureing the thickness at 1/4" from the edge and would like to know what you guys usually take your final edge thickness before sharpening.

Thanks.

I guess it's solely up to you, some knives I made have no secondary bevel at all; delicate but very sharp edge for precision tools like reed knives. Some have a tiny bevel, I grind to a hair thick then put a convex tiny edge for kitchen knives, these tiny edges with convex secondaries can be so scary sharp and the convex helps on durability. I leave thicker and thicker for choppers, bigger knives...

The purpose of your knife, the angle of your primary bevel and the stock thickness are the factors I believe. Just you have to be careful of your secondary bevel angle no matter how wide it is...
