i have a blade already to be ht'ed its 1095 and im not to sure i want to try that myself yet so i plan to have someone else do it. the edge is pretty thin. since the ht will be done in an electric heat treating oven does the edge thickness still need to be the thickness of a dime? right now its about half that? what is an easy way to take the edge back without messing up my finish sanding? i was thinking of draw filing, would that be okay or is there a better method. thanks.....willy:confused:

I'd have to say if it will be heat treated in a kiln then you should be okay. I have ground to probably 1mm or less and still the edges come out fine.

I have been working with some very thin stock lately. 1/16" thick. not dime thickness to begin with. My experience has been that you have to get from the heat to the quench fast. Such thin stock starts to loose heat instantly. Some of the blades are not flat shaped blades. hook-knives and carving tools. As long the normalizing and decarb issues are addressed the only problem is getting the blade in to the quench fast.

If you fill the kiln with an inert gas then you should be find as long as you are quick in your quench. The inert gas will prevent oxidation of the metal, which is why a dime thickness is often recommended.

im taking it to a local machine shop that already told me they could do the ht, they have an "oven" for that. however im not sure what process they use. are there any questions i should be asking?

If the blade is too thin it could warp. Make sure you let the person know what steel is being used. This will help him determined the proper temperatures to achieve during heat treat and temping process. If the blade is 40,000 thousands or more you will be ok with the treatment. But let him know the thickness of the blade. :)

After the blade is returned to you, you will still need to hand rub the blade out. The blade will have a black or gray appearance and will need to be cleaned up and finished. I wish you luck and hope to see the new member to the family.
