Curious about your individual preferences on grinding. I started out teaching myself how to grind edge up and still grind that way when possible. I soon found out though that grinding edge down makes a lot of sense sometimes so I worked hard on that method as well.
Still learning as I go, and hope to never stop learning as long as I grind.

well i'm still new at it, but i like to grind edge up. to dumb to have more then the one way at this time :D

I grind edge up as well. I just watched Harvey Dean's flatgrinding video and noticed he does both, keeping the handle in his right hand for both sides. That's why he's a master.

On hollow grinds it's edge up, on flat grinds it's edge up and edge down like Harvey Dean, works for me any ways.

I've just started on a crappy 1x42, but I found edge up works better for me (as everyone already said) you can see what you are doing.

Everyone laughs at me doing convex grnds, but I do them. I do a mix, since I get different angles and such. I generally start edge down for the 36 and 60 grit work, getting the shallowest curve I can, then switch to edge up for 120 to get the edge lines right. 320 and 400 I do a mix, since I'm really just getting grind marks out.

When I do scandis I do edge up on the work rest.

For me its edge up only, besides being able to see what I'm doing every time I tried it the other way not a lot of success. It would seem that you would have to look at the grind more often IMHO

I used to flat grind blind on one side till i made my disc grinder reversible then i had to retrain myself to grind holding the blade with my other hand it was a challenge at first but i learned how.:D
