Edgepro Apex

Well guys, I have some good news and some bad news. Good news is I fixed the problem I had in using the machine. Bad news is I cut myself on the scalpel of an edge I put on blade (good news w/ that is the edge is so sharp it made a nice clean cut) ;).

Ankle, I took your advice and called up Ben, which helped me greatly. Turns out I was using a tiny stroke of around 1/2" side to side, when I should've been going 2-3". That was the cause of the wavy look on the blade. Other than that, I'm able to get a blade extremely sharp in very little time, I'm very happy w/ the system.

I wonder if this thing works on wits...

I was just wondering how everyone's doing with their Edge Pros?

So far you can pick up anything in my house,(except the dog) and shave with it,(I wonder if I can use the Edge Pro to sharpen the dogs claws?):D

I love this system and can now see the short commings of the Lansky system.

With the clamp on the Lansky you are sharpening from a fixed point, and as the stones ride along the edge of the blade the angle changes the farther you get from the center point, causing the sharpened edge to be inconsistent in width.

Don't get me wrong I have a Lansky and had used it and thought it was the greatest invention since sliced bread,(felt the same way about the Sharpmaker by Spyderco)

They all have their limitations but as of now the Edge Pro is my current favorite. Having the ability to move the blade during sharpening provides a more consistent edge.

So far 2 friends will be ordering Edge Pros before years end.

Who knows, by years end I might resort back to free hand for convience sake, but for now the Edge Pro has a spot right next to all my knives.

One hint I got from a fellow forumite seems to really help, keep the stones submerged in a container of water while sharpening, it helps to keep them wet and clean while you sharpen.

During sharpening when you flip the knife I assume you have to use your left hand for that side of the blade..how long is the learning curve to be proficient in use?

Budman I wouldn't say I'm proficient yet, but I'm able to put any kind of edge on a blade, from scary sharp:eek: , to a long wearing working edge, and it only took a couple of weeks, and maybe 20 knives.

I'm still learning and with hunting season near I'm sure I'll get a lot of practice.:D
