Edgepro stone issue

Thanks a lot really. I was kinda debating whether to get unmounted stones as spares. I will probably get them now instead of the mounted ones.

No problem mang. Let me know where you end up finding the "make your own stones". I have a couple blanks and I was thinking of cutting up an old belt to make a strop. Maybe some balsa wood to fit as well. I'd be interesting in testing a few home made ideas. ;)

Hehehehe, nope not DIY stones although congress tools sells 1X6 inch stones. I was thinking about unmounted standard EP stones that Ben Dale sells for 8 bucks apiece instead of the mounted ones for 15.50 bucks. You unmount your old worn stones and mount the new ones on the old blanks. That's why I was so interested in the what glue to use and how to take it off.

I don't store my stones in water and I have no problems :)

If your stones are getting a dip in the middle you can level them easily. They have a kit to do so and it makes it really easy but you don't really need it.

I'll look into that too. I'm going to see if I can make it to the hardware store and pick up some balsa and order up a little compound.

I've had bad experiences with Congress and Falcon stones. Congress especially- my notepad which is open right now displays the large variance in width and lengths of their stones: many are too long to even fit on the Edge Pro aluminum stubs unless you file or grind them down. Was not happy in the least with both company's quality control.

I see. Nice to know, thanks.

Do you have any worthwhile recommendations? I remember seeing a youtube video where a guy was using a knock off edge pro and he made hismself some stones with the blanks, I cannot find the video after about 20 minutes of searching :(.

My recommendation is Boride Abrasive stones which are the default stones that Ben sells for the Edge Pro. Unfortunately, to order directly from Boride the minimum order is 12 stones of any one type/size and I haven't yet found a distributor that will sell individual stones.

I've been thinking about it for a while, and I'm wondering if we shouldn't get some group buys together. Also, changeofseasons has been experimenting with the SiC HD Boride stones with some great results, and those span from coarse all the way up to 1200 grit (AKA, they provide another option from Boride, but again; minimum order of 12 stones).

Again, I've tried all three companies and Boride comes out clearly ahead, but either we need to find a distributor or setup a group buy.

I hadn't checked this thread in a while. Spray adhesive is actually quite similar to rubber cement, just in a spray form. Like the spray adhesive, if you put the rubber cement on one side and let it sit for a minute and then press it on what it is to be mounted on for a more removable bond and apply to both surfaces for a more permanent one. I'm sure it would work just fine for you if it is all that is available.
