EDIT: modifying a MountainManDu.

I end up modifying the majority of my knives. I actually increased the size of the choil on my SMD substantially. It came with a satin finish but I gave it a hot vinegar wash before I started using it. I also knocked the shoulders off the edge but haven’t changed the final edge angle (still sitting around 25-30 dps I recon). Lemme know how your edge holds up to dry wood chopping at 20dps…

That looks great! 20 dps has worked for my BK9, I figured I’d give a shot on the MMD. The edge is convexing while I stropped it. I’m still going to modify the edge a little more.

Coated Bussekin are like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to find inside. Could be a gem. Could be fugly. It's all part of the game on coated stuff. You pays your money and takes your chances.

I never understood that saying… don’t you buy chocolate knowing what you’re buying??

It’s pretty ugly on side near the spine, it’s ok though. I bought to use it hard.

20dps is way to high.. I would think 18dps is max but 15dps would be optimal. If it fails at 15 on dry wood I would say something is wrong.

I generally stay at 20 dps, always worked for me.

Even at obtuse angles I tend to get micro chips/rolls with larger blades. I think I’m probably hitting little bits of rock/sand embedded in the wood. Recently I’ve been trying to remember to remove the bark before I start chopping.

Yeah I’ll probably take this guy down to around 15-18 dps and then I can always add a micro if needed.

Happily it came pretty thin behind the edge from the factory…

I have done a lot of testing on infi and sr101.

Sr101, did most of my testing from 15-18 dps but without a micro bevel tends to take a lot of damage even at 18dps. With a 24dps micro bevel still takes micro chipping but less ... it lacks toughness. I moved away from steels with high carbon content for large knives. I don't care what people say I have done enough testing and high carbon steels is just not optimal for hard use.

INFI at 18dps no micro bevel I did a few hours of testing non stop. Did the 1000 chop test on wood which have been in the rain and sand outside for weeks and split 100 pieces of wood. No chipping.

SR77 is interesting to me... it's suppose to have very high toughness and edge stability at that hardness. I'm wondering about that heat treat.
