I have a problem with members who post and then remove key elements from their messages leaving respondents looking like orphaned morons.
Frankly, I have no difficulty in appearing as an orphaned moron and need no assistance in this regard.
How about we all stand by what we have posted and just cop the responses.
Nothing wrong with an "oops....was thinking with my keyboard" once in a while....works for me.
IMO, editting should ADD content rather than covering the backside.

Knife content : "steel"

the only reason I edit is I sometimes think
of something after I submit. It saves having
to repost a new beginninging. I alwayus mage
mistooks and usually leave those.

Brain, i love the edit option. Sometimes ill say someting stupid, or misspell a word and dont want to sound stupid (too no avail, usually). So i think that option should be left open to the poster. Just my opinion.

Me too, the only time I will edit my post is when I see misspelled words.

I usually edit for spelling or to add something I missed. I rarely edit to retract something I've said and I NEVER deliberately edit a post after someone has responded to it. That's really bad form. If I need to modify a post in any[this was edited for a typo] substantive way after it's been read and responded to, I'll do it by a seperate post so my change is there for all to see, and the thread will make some sense to others. Seems like the proper etiquette.

Brian, I edit my posts ALL the time. I do this to clean up typos, or to rephrase a thought for clarity. Sometimes I have added thoughts. I have edited posts to remove content only twice. Once two months ago five minutes after I posted a comment that could be interpreted as a flame, and then last night, again within minutes of my post, when I realized my comment might be misinterpreted and that I may have misundertood the intention of the poster I was commenting on.

Given the tiny little window to write posts in, and no spell checker, editing posts for clarity is essential for me. The date of editing is logged. That is important to sort out the situation you described. I participate in other forums where folks routinely delete their entire posts, making threads look like mysterious swiss cheese. You can guess what might have been said, but you never know. I hate that.

I agree that flames should not be posted to begin with. Deletion of deliberate insults after viewing responses to the comments is not OK. It does leave dangling reponses and creates confusion in the thread.

But an edit notation at the bottom of a post should not necessarily imply that the poster wrote flames. I would never retract comments even if they angered folks just because of their reponse. I would hope others would do the same.

Are you suggesting that the edit function be eliminated altogether?

LOVE the edit option...I edit, more than I post.

You don't look like an idiot, people, for the most part, know when someone edits out their unappropriate text. Actually, it makes that person look even worse...like they have something to hide. If you don't want it to be read, don't post it.

ABSOLUTELY in agreement
My bitch is with the posters who want to retract an OPINION and leave the respondents hanging......I will add stuff and change spelling....but I do not resile from what I have said without acknowledging I said it.
If I say something that is controversial, I will handle the flak.....I won't pretend I didn't say it. If I am shown to be wrong I will admit it.....sometimes.
That's what happens when someone changes the text of a message to mean something entirely different.
Bloody happens.

I never change my opinion, since I am never wrong. Sometimes people need more of my opinions or need them explained, over, and over again, then I supplement my posting through editing. Sometimes I enhance my original spelling with even more creative spelling.

There is so much of me to love.

And, Jeff.....there are so many of us to love you.

I edti becasue I misspel. I think I did take a harsh comment out once, but there were no posts after about my comment, so I didn't leave anyone hanging...

I edit my posts because of spelling errors or it just does not look right on the screen, not to remove content.
I do not like it when people edit out their opinions, it makes reading a thread confusing because you often don't know what someone who makes a reply is talking about. Also if you are adding to your post maybe you can say that you are doing so. Ex. make a line that says:

EDIT: (insert new information here)

I think this would help clarify things a bit.

Proudly secure, yet liable to fall

Oh, brian i guess i wasnt clear about what kind of editing you were opposed to. Sorry for the hard time. Now im absolutely in agreement. I think people should stand behind their statements 100%.

No worries Ren......let's all edit away.
But let's do it right !

I just discovered this feature about a day ago. I have used it to add to a post, and now you tell me I can remove stuff also, but you would all rather we not do that, do I have this straight?
I hope your not suggesting we actually think before we post, because I have to tell you that's going to slow me down a lot. If people start removing stupid stuff they say, I'm going to get a lot fewer laughs per visit, and I may as well go back to watching TV.
I think if you're really sorry for something you've said, you should leave the original post, and add an apology. I guess you can say I'm Pro Choice and Anti Abortion.

Damn Phil! If I didn't know better I really would think you'd been thinkin'

EDIT ADDITION: it just occured to me. I'd like to do what Brian suggests. I'd like to Edit Away Brian. Anyone know how to delete figments?
