Edmund the Integral Master

Hello Everyone.....David was gracious enough to post this picture of Mastodon as appears after all the heavy metal was removed and all surfaced finished to 600 grit....The piece is currently being engraved and when finished will be most spectacular as this is the largest Integral i have ever attempted.....The raw bar of steel weighed in at 52 pounds and 7 ounces when it arrived at the shop July 30th 2009....After trimming and preparing it for milling it weighed 36 pounds and 3 ounces....This is because i could not find any more 440-c 1 1/4" thick so i had to take it 1 5/8" and thin it out....The piece you now see being engraved weighs 4 pounds and 10.5 ounces so i removed a great deal of heavy metal...The blade length is 12 3/4" and over all length is 20 1/8"...The guard from top to bottom is 5" and presented a real challenge while holding it to the 10" grinding wheel for the hollow grind....When this piece is ready for handles they shall be Ivory and Linda Karst Stone will cover this with Scrimshaw all over....This is the first of 3 Large Integrals that will be fully engraved with Ivory and Scrimshaw for one client and there is a super Kool Story that goes along with them....Stay tuned for more. Enjoy. Edmund
Beautiful work! I cant imagine how much work and cost for big block of steel like that lol. Please keep us posted and updated!

Here is a picture of Edmund's amazing Super Truck...

Now you may ask what a truck, special as it may be, has to do
with making Integral knives, well I'll let Edmund tell the story
of this exciting adventure he recently got himself involved in...

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Now thats a truck...Ed use to drive the big rigs before he hooked up with some famous knifemaker guy in Cali and started carving art out of blocks of steal.

Not my story to tell, but call Ed and get the book...as many will attest you wont be sorry!

Great thread

Well Every one here goes part of the story behind the Truck David posted....Big John is correct about me being a former Trucker....I left the road back in April 1986 to pursue Knife Making and the Lord of all has allowed me to do just that because April 16th next month is my 25th Anniversary as a full time knife maker...Now back to the Truck....In April 2009 a Super Kool Client came into my life that was having an XUV Being built for him down in Augusta, Ga. .....Shortly after our getting to know each other over the phone and through emails He suggested Having 3 super large Art Integrals made in trade for a Super Truck....After much deliberation i decided to go through with the deal and a Legally Binding contract was signed ....We started with a 2005 Ford F650 and added 60 options into the build....This vehicle weighs in at 14,200 pounds and hauls 200 gallons of Diesel fuel that feeds the Caterpillar C-7 Engine...Last year i drove it 8907 miles and got an average of 10.30 miles to the gallon and that my friends is fantastic economy for a machine that large....As the knives are being created for this Truck Trade, possibly the largest Knife trade Barter ever i shall send the images to David for posting. Enjoy. Edmund.

What a great deal for everyone involved!!

Everything is dwarfed relative to Edmund's Super Truck.
It is seen here in front of Edmund's workshop, making his
old truck look like a micro-van....

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

That thing has got to be a monster...cant wait;)

I believe I remember Edmund telling me that his Richard Petty Bowie was like 18 pounds when he started cutting on it.

Jere's work is phenomenal and it's tap-tap-tap with a hammer and chisel.

"Mastodon" shown here began as a 52 pounds and 7 ounce bar of
440-C steel. The engraved stage shown here, weighs 4 pounds an 10.5 ounces...
Its overall length is 20 1/8"....
