Education on what to look out for

It is interesting to go thru that page and recognize some of the knives.

What I do not get is this , I could see this company ripping off the designs of Bnechmade , Spyderco , etc and getting away with it , but to actually put Benchmade or DDR on a knife that is a near mirror of the original ?

How in the heck can they get away with this ?

I'm no fan of lawyers and lawsuits , but if ever there was grounds for a suit , I would think this would be it.

no ?

Hi Hammer,

They may not say "China".

Lavan,

That's what I mean when I say the "market" drives the industry.

Hi Rebeltf,

Not much we can do at this time. Making a law does not solve much. Enforcing IP laws is difficult outside of America, even difficult inside America.

There is no "patent Police". Only lawyers running on the victims dollars.

A number of years ago, somebody gave me a small knock off SAK. It was given away as a prize/gimic, or some such nonesense. The blade wasn't even sharp. The little scissors didn't close properley. I saw it in my junk draw the other day, thats what reminded me of that piece of junk. I wouldn't want these knives if they gave them away. All crap, as far as I am concerned. I am leaving to do a little duck hunting on my buddies land, shortly. He just called to let me know there are ducks on the pond. I will take my Spyderco Native, and my Kullervo puukko out today. I will rest my Helle Jubileum puukko, for it has been breasting many ducks this season. Time to work out the Kullervo from Kellam knives. The sharpest knife I have ever seen. We have 20 year old port, cheese, meatball sandwiches, hot dogs, etc. The Native will be heavily used today. We have a big fire there and relax in the outdoors. That is what good knives are for.

China keeps this country going with cheap money. China is the major buyer of US Treasury debt (Treasury Bonds) in the world today. Their governments policy keeps their Chinese dollar tied to the US Dollar unlike the Euro which is allowed to float.

US politicians are so afraid of angering our benefactor that I am surprised that the chinese decision makers don't have ius primae noctis here (enjoyed Braveheart again the other night). My guess is that as long as this lender/borrower relationship exists you won't see serious IP protection exercised, unfortunately.

If you want to keep that which is yours sometimes you have to take it. Did we, Americans, really have a Boston Tea Party? Perhaps a few shipping containers over the side will produce the desired result.

I went through that first link and to my surprise saw it went to 197 pages. I clicked on quite a few of them and saw all sorts of American names on the blades. That made me remember an article I read in some financial magazine about ten or so years ago where it mentioned the fact that copying/counterfiting is accepted practice in China and there's not the shightest hint of anything morally "wrong" with it. In another magazine or news report (I forget which), I also heard that only about 5% of the containers coming into the US are ever opened and checked.

I work at a plant that is within 75 feet of a major east/west rail line and every hour a train goes by headed towards Nashville loaded to the gills with double stacked 40foot containers with Chineese insignia. On break once I counted the cars on one and counted 134 cars. Double that and you get 268 containers of course. Now multiply that by 5% and you get 13.4 containers out of 268 that may or may not have all been checked. The other 254 got in this country scot free and what do you want to bet some were carrying counterfiet goods, like knock-off brand knives maybe? Jeeze, this hobby like others are probably going to get screwed in the future.

I know of several types of antiques that have already been mercilessly counterfited and it's just ruined them. The value of antique toys has been slaughtered, antique coinage is hurting badly, and so is depression era glass among other items. It's not that real collectors want cheap, they just want to know what they're buying is original and that's hard to do as the Chineese are masters at copying features and even the patina suggesting age.

Add all this to the popularity of Ebay and related web sites which is acting like a supply chain to disperse the knock off copies into the heartland of America and we have real problems. Sure, some folks want the look of a genuine Spyderco so don't mind buying a counterfiet knowing it's fake as crap because they can't afford a real one but still want the look. What happens later down the road when they can afford it and then don't trust what they're buying? Well, they've only helped screw themselves and everyone else so they really can't complain.

Unless we as a nation start cutting down from buying anything chineese made or suspected of being fake then this will only get worse until it breaks the hobby as a whole and the Chineese Borg moves on to ripping something else off. But my biggest problem is reserved for the US govt knowing about it and then doing little more than winking as the stuff hits our shores.

In the future I suppose the only way I'll be able to verify the authenticity of any collectable I buy will be to save all the manufacturers's packaging and invoice I got with it as if I was going to have to introduce it as evidence in court or something to prove it's actually genuine. Geeze....

I'm still ticked but rant off for now.

This is what we get when we support in any way a foreign competitor.
People now enjoying the weakest US dollar in history still line up at Walmart for their "bargains."

They never learn.

Our own goverment has assisted corporations to kill jobs while also killing markets.

Just remember one thing.

NO SUCCESSFUL ORGANISM IN THE HISTORY OF THE EARTH HAS EVER ASSISTED ITS COMPETITOR

Hate to turn this political, but knives are our hobby and they are about to be devastated in value.

While you may "think" you are "managing" your money by seeking the cheapest price, you are in actuality committing economic suicide.

:(:(:grumpy:

197 pages. They are even ripping off Cold Steel, Boker, and Gerber, how ironic. Did I miss the Sebenza?

Next will be cheap pickup trucks and cars - ATV's and motorbikes are all over the Midwest already. We already have watches, electronics, computers, furniture, clothing, tools - cripes, you name it, it's been sold in America. I went to Harbor Freight yesterday and this stuff is already here.

NOW the knives come, and there is anguish and gnashing of teeth. How hypocritical. Go look at what I outlined in red and tell me you have never bought nor do not possess an item from the above that is Chinese origin.

If you do, I salute you, what incredible commitment. If not . . . well, now you know who the problem is.

Some more observations I've made-

The counterfeit Emersons are getting more accurate. They're now using a slotted pivot screw, but the scale screws are still torx. Real Emerson's use phillips-head screws on the scales and a slotted screw on the pivot:

The real Emerson Karambit has the "wave" feature and has a thumb-hole, not a thumb-stud. Also, on the real deal, the hardware is all black, including the slotted, not torx, pivot screw. The second version, from the same site, is a better fake, but still a fake. Isn't it strange that there are different levels of accuracy in counterfeit knives advertised on the same site!?:

Spyderco never made a "tiger-stripe" version of the Warren Thomas Karambit, and the blade steel on the real deal is VG-10, not 440. Also, the screws on the real deal are phillips-head, not the funky torx screws:

The real Buck/Strider folders, with the non-SNG style handles, sported thumb-studs, not thumb-holes:

Benchmade never made any knives like these:

CRKT never made a knife that looked like this:

And it looks like Chris Reeve Knives is now being targeted as well:

The accuracy of these copies is astounding...while I've never bought a fake (accidental or not) I'm going to have to be a lot more careful now :(

I'm suprised that they would copy CRKT.

Not knocking CRKT , one of my favorite brands but many of their knives are very wallet friendly in the first place.

I would think counterfeiting would go for the biggest and baddest most expensive only.

 You are just showing off you know nothing about economics or international trade...
