OK, I defintely need a quick education on Strider knives.

I'd like to buy a quality (custom OK) 3"-3.5" folder to present to my son upon Marine corp basic training graduation in November.

All the custom Strider folders appear to be 4". I didn't see anything on a BG-42 SB2 (tanto or drop point --probably prefer the drop point) on thier web page.

What exactly IS available out there? I want something nice and I'm thinking maybe $350 tops. Sebenza is an alternative, but I don't think he'd think it was as "cool".

Did the Corp issue that reg for blade length or is that his personal preference? If so, look at the Buck Mini Strider, or an Emerson like the SOCFK. Strider will do a custom, but they are back logged with orders, so it might not get there by Nov. Also check the exchange for Strider folders. Good luck for you and your son.

Also, you might want to check with EKIM at:

He might have something on order.

I posted something similar in another forum and was told it was "around 3" max". Probably depends on the base.

I recall 3.5" was the max when I was in the Air Force. I had a Buck folder with about a 3.25" blade just to play it safe.

What exactly is he using it for?

I still like my Buck Strider and Emerson SOCFK as EDCs.

Can he carry an auto? Benchmade, Dalton, Microtech, Protech, Whitewolf, Swat, Boker all make good autos for about 100 to 250.
If its manuals, all of the above plus Emerson and Camilus.

If you want a custom try:
www.knifeart.com
www.tripleaughtdesign and find the customs in the Brands catagory.

There are lot of options and I hope I didn't confuse you too much. Good luck.

First of all, Semper Fi!

A Marine's family is an important part of the Corps. Is he graduating from San Diego or PI? Good luck to you and him from all of us jarheads on the forum.

As far as Striders go,

For general purpose in the Corps I would suggest the Strider/ Buck. It is a very durable/ functional blade. They are easy to come by at most knife stores. It is big enough for almost any task, but will still be comfortable to wear with cammies and civilian attire. You should then take the hundred or so that you have left and get him a good leatherman tool to go with it. Then he will be set.

A Strider WB would be the perfect gift for when he becomes an NCO.

Just my thoughts,

Michael,
I don't know of any military regulation governing the lengh of a knife. The only law your son would have to conform to is civil law and The Strider customs are legal to carry. I would advise this. I your looking to get a custom Strider you better start now. The Strider/Buck is also a very good option. Not sure what your son is going to do in the Marines, but I think the Stider/Buck would probably suffice. It will also be readily available. What ever you choose I think that it's a great idea that your giving your son such a gift for such an event. My father was at my boot camp graduation and it is something I will never forget.

Mr Michael,
I have to agree with Vince. A young Devil Dog having his Father at his graduation from Marine Corps Recruit Training will be his finest hour to date. Mine was also. Anything we can do to help, we will. Using economics and availability as your guidelines, you have many options with this much advanced notice. All the suggestions posted here are good ones and I will only add our best wishes from all of us at Strider Knives to your son, yourself and to those who have joined in here with great suggestions!
Semper Fi,
Duane Dwyer
