Well, everytime I open that triangular box I find myself impressed in one way or another. This time is was the 12" AK Villager. I know a lot of you all have already got one of these, but I just had to chime in and agree with what's already been said...this is one blade that is going to see a lot of use. Sarge, I remember way back when you recommended this size AK and you were right.

Mine doesn't have a kami's mark on it, but I think the rest of the batch a couple of days ago were by Kumar. This one looks good enough to be Kumar's work.

I know I will be in the market for a bigger Villager in the future...no way around it.

Oh, and El Pato Poquito? That's the name for my new khuk.

Ben, that AK sounds really neat. But watch out naming a 12" Khukuri, you might atract the attention of a certain Duck. :p he he he

My villager showed up today too. I agree, it is something to behold.
The bolster will be just a bit harder to polish up than the rest of the steel but, I don't want it too shiny for a user any way. The wood is amazing. It looks dark enough to be mahogany? It looks almost dark enough to be rosewood. I got my hands on it too late in the day to do much with it but, tomorrow is another day. I'll oil up my Bura 12" and work with this one for a while and see if I can do it justice.:) :D

The wood IS different on these guys. We'll see what Murphy's Oil Soap and/or mineral spirits show. Tomorrow.

Aard, let us know how the wood treatment works out.

Pappy, I was thinking the same thing....mahogany or rosewood. I settled with the fact that it looks more like rosewood to me. Did yours have a maker's mark on the blade? It's kind of funny; these are supposed to be "rustic" yet mine has great fit and although the finish is different, it's really nice. I like the satin look of the blade. I am undecided as to how I'm going to treat the wood. I may just apply a little boiled linseed oil and leave it at that.

Wildmanh...aren't all khuks special? ;)

Well, that's our size queen heard from.

So, what does "El Pato Poquito" mean?

Red, it means, "The Little Duck." :D The correct term should have been "chiquito" but that just didn't sing.

Muy bueno, Berkley.

Saint, that's one of the few times that I actually laughed out loud in front of the computer.:D Thanks. After this last week, I really needed that.

Oh! That explains it.

Duck, The VIKINGS named their weapons.

Yes he did, I double checked my copy of "Hagar the Horrible's Very Nearly Complete Viking Handbook"

Only applied first coat of tru oil so far, but the wood is already looking nice. Least, on the chamka and karda. Haven't started on handle of AK yet, becaues I'm still unsure what I want to edo with it. Was going to thin it down at bolster so that it was same thickness(wood is noticably thicker than bolster where they meet), but it fits my hand really well way it is now. So think I'll leave it alone, jsut giving it some more thought before I start on it.

ETP, I agree with Red. I have a Chitlangi that I'm tru-oiling for a young soldier on the DMZ. Same situation with the handle and bolster. I think I'm going to leave it because it fits my hand nicely and I don't know the size of the other person's hand.

Red, know what the inside joke is about the name "Hagar?" I found it one day by accident. Translated from Nordic (I don't remember which language) it means, "One who flees." :D

Yeah, think I'm leaving this one, as it will be a user. Ones I refinish for looks though I may thin handle on.

But yeah, this one is getting rough scotchbrite blade finish, got a quick convex=ing, and pommel/keepers and bolster are getting a dirty(and smelly, as I have cheap stuff) cold blue.

Won't look nice, but will give me a great camp knife. Have another camp knife I made myself(it's in avatar) if I want pretty one.

Pappy, I have tried to email you two times and get a message saying that it won;t go through. Wanted to let you know so you didn't think that I was being rude.

I also got my 12" AK and like it very much. The edge needs a bit of work but I am fine with the rougher finish.

ETP, the knife in your avatar really is nice. I was noticing it the other day. I am getting sort of charged up by some of the great blades being made and am starting wish I could try something like that.

N2S...LMAO:D :D Now I can't get that song out of my head. It's like after I took my family through "It's a Small World" in Disneyland.

DON'T start thinking that way.

All it will do is cost you tons of money that you'll never get back

Course, it's also great stress relief, the smell of sparking carbon steel is intoxicating, and the smell, and taste, and touch(Though don't do it more than once) of steel reaching critical temp then slamming into the quench(And watching the quench oil burst into flame if you're lucky) is amazing.

Not to mention the joy of taking a flat bar of steel(or any other shape if you're forging), and turning it into something that you can use(won't go anywhere near as far as calling any of mine a work of art, not for years yet) is reward in itself. the joy of creation
