Im making a knife with Elder Box Wood on it what should I use on it. Like stain, polish, to treat it so it looks amazing ? Going to 400 or 600 grit. thanks for reading !!

Is the the Box Elder stabilized? If so, you can take it 800+ grit and finish however you'd like depending on the use of the knife. On kitchen knives I use a microcrystalline wax, on users, Tru-Oil or Tung Oil and for lite use knives, superglue.

yes it is stabilized, its from tru-grit in Ontario Ca, ... I have some tung oil how many coats should i put on, where can i get microcrystalline wax. how many years you been making knives

If it has been stabilized you really only need to finish it to a high grit. A good wood wax will help bring out the shine and beauty of the wood. Tung oil if for unstabilized wood. Unstabilized wood you want something that will suck into and seal up the natural pores.

ya definitely a high grit then wax.... i have done some elder box wit a super fine 1000+ grit with a butcher block oil, than a white honing compound on some leather, came out amazing. It wasn't super shiny but it really brought out the colors and tones of the wood

I used the leather/compound just to see what would happen

So would u recommend the same wax as carbon steel said

Slip regardless of stabilization, wood will still absorb some finishes. Ed Caffrey is the one who turned me onto Tru Oil and it only takes a few coats to bring out the shine. Microcrystalline wax works on metal and wood. As MNofUSN said, the wax will bring out more figure and deeper colors even on a high grit finish. Depending on the wood species, I will either use a Johnson's paste wax or Renaissance wax. Anyhow, give them a try on some cut off pieces and see what works for you.

On a side note, I've started using another brand of microcrystalline wax that is working great so far. Its made without harsh chemicals and is food safe and can be handled without fear of leaching of toxins and solvents. http://doctorswoodshop.com/Products/WalnutOilMicrocrystalWax.aspx
