Election of a HI Moderator

I am sure if the Cantinistas rally around the forum, maintaining the same spirit it has always been known for, and generally support the same few best-known, reliable candidates for moderator, Spark would be inclined to go along with those candidates.

Try to think of someone who can step in assertively, and someone who can handle the technical requirements, and someone who can smooth the way through difficult times. This may not all be the same someone.

I haven't spent enough time here to vote on it, but I also think we need Yvsa, Munk and Howard Wallace whether or not they end up officially as moderators.

Yvsa Munk and Dan.
All three.

As I was reading through this thread, I kept wanting to add Dan K to the list. Glad that Mauirob beat me to it. Any one of these great guys would be wonderful.

I'd second Dan and raise a Josh ;) Also Nasty has incredible people skills IMO and would make a really super good one!

Moderators are not elected. Spark selects them himself.

If you'd like to nominate someone, it is best to e-mail your thoughts to Spark privately. You see, only one or two will be selected and so if you nominate someone and they're not selected for whatever reason, that could be embarrasing to you or to that person. So, it's best to just make your nominations to Spark privately.

I see a lot of wisdom between the lines there. Someone could be an extremely good person, deserving of a lot of respect, but not have particularly good moderating skills or else ability to do the job conveniently. Just like with any other stuff. Some might not be able to commit the time, etc.

Heck, if you needed help moving a sectional sofa, there are quite a few forumites that it'd be just wrong to ask them to help, but it must not take anything away from them. And you'd sure want to have them join you on the sofa once it's been moved. While there are some bad people out there, we need to be very clear that not being particularly good at carrying large items up stairs does not make a fellow forumite less of a person.

(To be honest, there's only one "regular" who I think would be a grave mistake making a mod. Whatever name he comes up with next.)

I'd follow any of the gentlemen noted into hell and back. I'm sure those meant to lead will step up to the plate and do a fine job. The cantina is being tested right now. i KNOW we will pass with flying colors.

Thanks for clarifying the process. Although I think Esav had it right - we can hash it out in the Cantina, make a suggestion to Spark, and it'll probably be a good enough choice for him to go along with. As someone else said, the list of regulars we WOULDN'T want to have the job is shorter than those who would do well.

Dan, Josh, also good choices. My impression is that you both have excellent technical skills that would be very valuable.

One thing that I would ask everyone is to try and detach your ego from this thread. I appreciate all of you, and honestly do think you would make a good mod. However, we're looking for a few people to follow Bill and Rusty - big, big shoes to fill. Also, the Cantina is very good at self-regulating. Mods only rarely have to step in, but when they do it's usually something big. When I first read this thread, I thought briefly - hey I'd make a great mod! I'm good with computers, and have pretty balanced views! Wouldn't it be neat! That lasted for about a second. Then I realized I can't monitor the forum continuously, I'm not so good at jerking people back when things get out of hand, and a hundred other reasons why there are better people for this job.

Anyway, just because your name doesn't get tossed in the had doesn't mean you're not a valuable contribution to the Cantina. Also, just because someone mentions your name doesn't mean you should take the job. Transition is hard for any organization - it opens the door for personal attacks, factions to form, etc. etc. I think we're better prepared to handle it than most, but I don't want to see great schisms over the mod question. All the choices so far have been good, and there are more that haven't been mentioned. So the Cantina will go forward, even if your personal "best" choice isn't a mod.

I think munk/Yvsa/Howard would be an excellent team. I also think we need to figure out what Yangdu wants to do at this point. Of course, the ultimate decision rests with Spark. We can't forget that without him we wouldn't have Bladeforums.

Thanks to Cougar especially for being the Cantina bouncer when necessary. We're lucky to have him around. Esav, I see you around here more and more lately as well :) Gollnick--nice to see you here too.

In the meantime, until everything gets straightened out, the Cantina regulars should do their best to behave and keep things mellow. We know how Bill and Rusty would want this place to run.

Nasty is pretty handy and carries a hammer for "fixin" things ;)

Thanks guys...but I have to level with you.

I am a Sgt at Arms...not a President or Vice President or Secretary or Treasurer. I know my limitations and quite frankly, moderators aren't really allowed to express themselves as freely as the rest of us. *I* don't know if I would have the maturity that Yvsa has (purposely limiting myself to one name now knowing that he is an example all of us could pretty much agree on) regarding setting aside my opinions as he would be able to do (as Bill and Rusty did).

I have never been fired from a job or position and wouldn't want to start here with all of those I consider friends, let alone those I call Brother.

I will help with marketing, computer skills, spotting the skunk and carrying that couch...but respectfully (and thankfully) decline having my name in the same hat that Bill and Rusty wore.

Got to admit that the trust shown even being mentioned felt great though! :D

.

Well said, Nasty. The "Sgt at Arms" duty is very, very important. And that mod hat is hard to take off. We need people at the extremes, but the mod should be more in the middle, IMHO. There were a few people whom I didn't mention because I thought it better for them to remain unmuzzled.

I would have added Dan to the list, but...
I am surprised that no one suggested Bruise Lee?
He seems to be lurkiing around here forever.

I am deeply honored and humbled by the nominations, but I respectfully decline.

I will always be around to help Yangdu with technical issues and she's knows that.

Again, thank you for the vote of confidence. I hope there is no misunderstanding about my decision. I will gladly support anyone on this forum willing to take on the responsibility.

Folks, this is a very trying and sad time for those of us who have lost friends.

We are discussing the selection of some new moderators for the forum and I am very confident that you will be pleased with the outcome once we get everything sorted out.

Thanks for your patience and understanding. With your energy and help the HI forum will remain a great place for many years to come.
