I have a 2hp single phase motor hooked up to my KMG and lately it has been popping sporadically. It does trip the breaker one of every 10 or so times I turn it on, but it also actually "pops" while I'm grinding. It doesn't stop working or get noisy or anything it just makes a loud "pop" every now and then and I'm concerned it is a symptom to something that's going to kill it eventually. Any one have a suggestion?

My guess is that it is NOT a TEFC motor and the grinding/metal dust is getting inside. This causes the "pop" noise. It is mostly annoying right now., but can eventually fry your motor, and possibly fry you in the process.

If the motor is an open frame type, vacuum and blow out the motor windings every day when you are done grinding. Placing a piece of filter material from a furnace filter around the open places on the motor helps keep some of the grit out.

Stacy, you're up awfully early today (time of post shows 5:41am?) - but you gave the exact same advice I was thinking as I read the OP's problem. Open frame motor, metal dust, blow 'n vacuum out - think about putting filter over inlet side of air flow. You got it all covered.

Could also be some loose connections in the peckerhead?

Could the starter capacitor be popping?

Yep, not a TEFC. I was trying to get by for a while on the $25 used Marathon motor I found on Craigslist. So far it's lasted 2 years of solid grinding. I bought some of that blue filter material and made a box with it to cover the whole motor.Good advice, thanks gentlemen!

I've made use of open motors for grinders for YEARS! Just blow then out like Stacy suggested and NO WET Grinding. unless you want to get shocked!;)
