For the past 12 years I've got my electric motors for my grinder from friends who had a few laying around. Now it seems I'm out of luck. No one has any old motors, so I guess I'll have to go new. Just wondering what source you guys recommend. Harbor Freight? Someone else? And while I'm on the subject, what is the best motor and performance characteristics to buy? I've never had the chance to actually chose.

Grizzly is relatively inexpensive, and ships fast. I used one of their motors for a lathe rebuild I finished recently.

surpluscenter.com or ptjindustrial.com are good places to look. Be sure and know what you're looking for in terms of HP and phase.

The only thing throwing me right now is I keep running into the term "farm duty' motors. I take that to mean a motor designed for harder, more continuous use, but don't know if that would be suitable for a belt grinder. I am assuming yes, someone have any thoughts?

I've dealt with 2 different online suppliers for motors and can recommend them both based on my experience.

I purchased the Leeson motor for my KMG from these folks. It's a single phase 1.5HP "farm-duty" motor and is the same one Rob uses for his 3-spd package.

I purchased the Leeson motor for my disc grinder from these folks. It's a 3 phase 1HP and is also the same one Rob uses for his disc grinder package.

Both suppliers were smooth to deal with and the shipping was prompt.

Look at the specs

TEFC

make sure that the mounting and shaft sizes and lengths are there.

I bought three motors from Electric motor warehouse and they are super. Be sure to buy a TEFC motor (dustproof) make sure to specify base mount or face mount or both. Also decide if you will want variable speed (three phase motor) and what hp you want. If 2 or above then you need 220 volt outlet. Search this site for more motor info before buying. Larry
