electricity usage of power tools

I figured with all the sun we get in Texas I would use some solar powered tools. But after my wife got sunburned she refused to use the hacksaw anymore. (yeah I know that's probably the worst joke of the century)

I'm curious to see how much my electric bill goes up this month. Spent several additional hours out there this month and left the jet air filter on overnight a couple times.

My rate is .09 to .13. If he is saying $300/.13=2307kwh 2307/18workdays= 128kwh per day. 128kwh/8hrs=16kw a hour average 16000/220volts=72amps on all the time or 1hp=746watts. 16000total watts/ 746watts= 21hp. That is one big ass drill press running for eight straight hours a day with a full load on it. This is possible depending on lighting and ac, but if all that stuff is already on and you just pay the difference it is astronomical.

Thanks so much guys. I'm glad to hear this. Landlord said I used $300 using my tools last month. Now I know it's not possible.

Your landlord needs to learn some basic math and perform a simple "common sense" calculation before making claims like that.

My shop actually does use that much power. Consuming that much electricity is no small task. The copper conductors in the wiring required for that much current are as big around as your finger.

We just got a graph in the mail from the power company yesterday.

They tell me I am using 170% more power than the average house in my neighborhood, based on a 100 house sample.

Not 170% of the power, but an EXTRA 170% !

I use the juice of almost 3 households.

Well, don't be too surprised if a SWAT team kicks down your door.

kelly tells me my shop added about 20-30 bucks to the bill when i moved my shop here (i have a 2hp KMG 2HP bridgeport 14' metal saw evenheat kiln wood saw wood lathe metal lathe 12 inch disc grinder a few lights SB lathe and mini mill ) i am full time but do do much on weekends. i do plan HT and try to have at least 15 blades cause when the kilns hot i might as well do a fwe batches as rebound time from 1500 to 2000 is not bad after the kiln is preheated
