Just wanted to share a method of marking blades for those on a budget or looking for an inexpensive way to mark a few blades for fun. could not get my photos to work maybe this will http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=814934&a=5923543
Well here goes the pics--if it doesn't work I will keep trying till it is right.

This is pic of the whole unit. I used a dimmer switch wired to a receptacle so that anything plugged in can have the voltage varied. After I found the setting needed I just marked the switch to set it every time.
I think you could put a volt meter in the loop if you wanted to know the input.

This is a pic of where I tapped into the charger(disclaimer-I am not an electrician and a friend showed me this so the terminology is weak). There are two red wires coming out of the rectifier that I connected to. These wires run to the ground clip and the marking pad used on the blade. This is the AC curcuit. To use the DC curcuit I use the battery charge wires that are already attached to the machine.

I use salt water for the electrolyte. Here are another pic to hopefully help.

I know that it is probably not as good as a factory machine but it does work and I was on a really tight budget at the time and my only desire was to make some knives to enjoy.

I added the pic of the entire setup. I was having a bad computer day when I posted this the first time. The pic is in the album with the link above in the first post. If I hosed this up just drop me an email and I will send the photos direct. Sooner or later I will get the hang of it.

V E R Y N I C E and it does what?
Seriously though you should get a little more punch out of this than the personalizer?/
I would like a set of photos and some construction hints maybe.
Thanks

I will ad some pics to the link and some construction info along with a etch pic as soon as I get back to the ranch after work.
Once again I appologize for my inability to make the post a little cleaner.

Scott

Thanks go to JoeG26er for posting the pics.

Hey Jonesy....

Basically what you have made is a Brush Plating or Wand Plating outfit..
With this you can not only etch,, you can brush plate different items in gold, silver, copper and bronze,,given you have the proper solutions....

I'm a custom plater by trade BTW...A little different than I'm use to doing,,but similar effect...

I think you have your controls on the wrong end of the power grid though...

You should be using the reostat on the output,,not the input...You may damage your eletronics using a dimmer switch in this manner...Then again maybe not...

To do it properly,,get a DC reostat from Radio Shack and attach it to your output,,then there won't be a need to get into the guts of the charger...

Mount the reostat onto a piece of wood or in a little box,, then use a multimeter to check your output as you dial up the reostat. Make hash marks on the enclosure so you know what voltage you are using....

I'm not sure what voltage you need to etch,, but effectively if you were to use say 9V DC, you could attach the wand to a 9V DC power pack and be done with the entire mess.If you etch at say 12V DC,,then find a 12V power pack the same way...

Good Stuff though,,no matter how you slice it...

Thanks for the info Eric.
What your saying makes sense. I haven't smoked anything yet but maybe I have been lucky so far.
I will give the radio shack idea a shot.
I don't have a good history with electricity but I am always open to suggestions.
I knew that someone could put the tune on the project if it was posted.

Thanks again to all the good folks on the forum.

Hey thats great idea

I am just finishing my first set of blades and need a way to mark them. How did you make the etching part? The square thing on the coiled wire? How are you making stencils? Many questions I know but I am going to make one as soon as I figure yours out. I know my Fatherinlaw has at least one battery charger collecting dust

Could this be used to ANODIZE?
