Electrolysis pics

I'm an archaeological artifact conservator and I've used electrolysis extensively, especially on cannons! It's very effective, especially for removing cholrides and restabilizing submerged metal objects. We typically used a solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH - 3 to 5%) and deionized water, with a stainless steel mesh anode surrounding the suspended object. Just be mindful of any contact between the anode and cathode (ie the object), even including the wires going to your power supply. Also, you can use a diluted solution of tannic acid to coat the object post electrolysis, though it does leave a black tinted coating (like what you see on a lot of cannons in museums).

It's worth noting that the solution becomes toxic if using a stainless anode.

Very true!

Also, a setup with the more caustic hydroxide solution will require chemical resistant gloves and a fume hood, unless you enjoy a chronic cough and generously exfoliated skin :p
