Elevator cable?

I have the opportunity to pick up some scrap (new) elevator cable from an elevator repair guy I know. Apparently it is fine stranded for high flexibility and cored with a rope to hold lube.

Is it useful for a first attempt at cable damascus? Sorry, I have no other information, but being for elevators I suspect it would be pretty high quality.

From what I've read, anything with a non-steel core (i.e. rope, cord, nylon, etc.) will have to be stipped of it first. IMO not worth the trouble. Just my 2 cents...maybe someone else will have a better insight / experience.

I personally like beginning with a large cable. I don't like stripping the rope core out either, even though it's not difficult to do.

I get new wire rope from Mazzella. This way, when I order it, I know what kind of steel it is, which helps with the heat treat. It's not all that expensive to buy it new.

I like working with "known" steels.

Just my thoughts.
