My dad and I went out elk hunting this afternoon. We were mainly west of Pringle. We spotted a big bull at about 2PM or so. It was trotting up a hill, and it got away. At 5PM or so, we spotted one about 75 yards away. It was five points on its right side, but its left-side was broken off. While my dad could have easily taken him, he decided to pass. I agreed.

These are elusive creatures. We will try again tomorrow morning.

You're getting closer, Ken. Good luck to you and your dad tomorrow.

Sounds like you may have a bruiser in the area, good luck getting him.

Thanks for the update.

My dad at least feels good that he could have taken an elk today. It was good that he passed that one up, due to its broken rack.

And he should, just having the opportunity is good enough in my book, and just think, next year old half rack will be a dandy.

With envy in my heart I am with you in spirit.;)
Elk is one of my totems, and I have passed many more than taken. I wish you and your Dad a bountiful hunt, it has already been a good one.

No elk today. :grumpy:

We were out and about for over eight hours. Didn't see any.

We will try again in the AM. I drive back to California on Monday. My dad has the entire month, but it would be nice if he were to get it while I am here.

good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!! whitetail bowseason starts here(MS) on OCT 15th, been out doing some scouting and think it should be pretty eventful!!!

I'm headed up to the Sierra Madres tomorrow. Good luck to you and keep yer powder dry.

Well, bummer. We were out for about nine hours today. Again, we didn't see any alk whatsoever. The good news is that my dad the entire month, so I am confident that he'll be successful. It's a drag that he couldn't get it while I was visiting for antelope hunting.

Anyway, I drive back to California tomorrow, to the tune of just under 1,400 miles. I expect to roll into our driveway by 9PM or so. I enjoy my visits with my parents, but am very much looking forward to getting home.

Hey, if you always found 'em, they wouldn't calling it hunting. They'd call it finding.

"I'm going out in the back forty to find deer, Margie. Be home in about an hour." :D

Safe journey home, Ken.

1400 miles in one day?? Who are you? Winston Wolfe?

(That might make your dad "Lash Larue." ROTFL!)

Heck, if elk hunting is like this, and is genuine hunting, then our antelope hunting is more like finding.

Well, it is hunting, but simply a different type. Elk are elusive beasts. Antelope are everywhere.

Yep. I plan to start driving at 2:30AM. I will reach Rawlins, Wyoming by 7AM. That's a refuel stop. I should get to the Utah border by 9:30AM. It takes three hours to cross Utah. I stop in Tooele for another refueling. Time goes back an hour. That puts me in Nevada by 11:30AM. It takes five hours to get across Nevada, with a refuel stop in Lovelock. I am driving through Reno by 5PM. Home is about four hours from Reno. I have done this one-day drive almost ten times.:thumbup:

Am I counting right? 19.5 hours straight?

You must be snorting INFI dust, Ken.

That's about right. It sure beats getting close to Reno, unloading all my crap (I don't like leaving rifles and meat in the SUV), then loading it all back up again for a short drive the next morning. Given that I get to Reno by 5PM, making the final stretch is a breeze.
