Howdy,

Just got back from a great Elk hunting trip. My brother and I each downed a bull - mine is a 5x5, his is a 6x5.

Below are a few pic's of the skinning action. The first two are of my bull, the second two are my brothers:

Yeah Buddy theres some good eatin right there, CONGRATS!
What kind of knife are you using to skin that bugger with?:D

What's your guess to the dress out weight of that dude? I'm guessin' 110-120lbs of MEAT. Good shot, great kill. Congrats to you and your bro. Moose

PS, don't shoot any mooses, they might be family or friends

Man, that's a lot of meat.

I've never had Elk. How does it compare in taste to your average whitetail deer? Similar? Better?

Congrats! Makes Missouri deer look kind of wimpy. Which makes Texas deer look like kittens. :D

awesome brother. congrats. my buddy just got a 6x6 in colorado a couple weeks agao

and to answer the question above. elk is some of the best meat period. its better than beef. very lean with just enough fat.

and moose becareful they say that is the only wild game better than elk

I'll know better once we butcher them (the quarters are hanging in a cooler right now, 7-10 days), but I'm guessing just under 200lbs of meat (no bones) for each one.

With respect to knives used:

I used a Bark River Drop Point Hunter to field dress. For skinning, I used three knives: Bark River Drop Point Hunter (154CM), Bark River Manitou (52-100 carbon steel), and a Buck Gen 5 (CPM154). I wanted to give them a workout and see how they faired since they are vastly different designs and different blade shapes and steels.

I loaned my brother a custom drop point hunter I won on the general forum earlier this year. My great uncles knife was dull, so I loaned him a modified stag handled S30V Gerber Freeman to use.

All the knifes worked great and held a working edge for the task at hand. They all needed some touching up and resharpening by the time we were through.

Nice work! At least you didn't chop him up with a Junglas :D
