Bit too reddish for Elm (might be the camera)and very straight grained (which isn't usual for Elm).
Burrs and knots tend to be very dark brown (although that piece doesn't have any).
Density variations on the cross cut suggest Oak.

I think it is some kind of wood.
To test that theory, place some in the forge and see if it burns. If it does, it is almost certain that it is wood. :)

Agreed. And then when it is fully burned, you can rest knowing that it was either elm, oak, or ash and not really fantastic for handles :D

Ya gotta love how the this crowd carefully whittles away the deadwood to reveal the solid heartwood at the center of the matter.

Well done folks...well done! :p:p

Elm is quite a shapeshifter.

These are also pieces of elm.

That really looks like quartersawn red elm to me, we have a bunch of the stuff on our place. It's a PAIN to split into firewood. Here's some pics I found of red elm:

Of course it can also look like this:

Cheers

Oak, ash, and elm all look quite similar at a distance. Oak is easily distinguished by its smell. The other two require more careful examination, and there are quite a few pictures above showing the variation in elm. It is nearly impossible to say what a wood is for sure from a picture.

My Elm looks like this, but it's Chinese... (.... imports !) Probably going onto some Santukos....
