Murray Carter is one of the most well known and established knife makers in the world. He specializes in using ancient Japanese forging techniques and is one of a handful of American smiths who are able to purchase Hitachi steels directly from Japan. He holds classes in his shop, instructing others on the techniques he has learned, and often puts out videos explaining his skills and methods. Along with that, he allows anyone to use his blade designs, and for that I am very grateful!
This knife is one of Murray's latest designs, the FS1 Field knife. However, breaking with Carter tradition, I decided to use Elmax stainless steel and mesquite wood handles. Elmax is a very clean powder steel with excellent toughness for a stainless steel, and has good wear resistance. Heat treated by Peter's to 63HRC with cryo. The handle is locally sourced mesquite, and has excellent tight grain and is very dense. I was pleasantly surprised with how well the wood looked, but did discover a slight issue on the left hand scale. You can notice a couple of voids near the rear pin. They are small and were filled in with an epoxy/mesquite dust mix. A "beauty mark", as they say! Pins are stainless steel. The blade features a subtle swedge from tip to ricasso. Balance point is smack dab in the middle of the front finger groove. The handle fits my hands perfectly, like it "locks in" when I grab it, and feels simply wonderful. The design is a good one, IMHO.
Asking price for this baby is only SOLD. This comes with a free custom made Kydex sheath and free shipping anywhere in the USA. Paypal preferred (samuraistuart@yahoo.com), but I will gladly take a check and ship the knife once cleared. I'm quite proud of this one! If you would like to see more pics (these 2 are slightly overexposed and don't show the grind line quite as sharply as would have liked, and washed out the pointy tip), by all means just let me know. I"ll take more and post them. Thank you for checking out my work! Also, follow me on Instagram stuartalandavenport.
