Hey guys I figured I would show a couple process pics of me building a batch of my Loveless inspired Northwest special.
I opened my books for a small 5pc run of these in Elmax a few months ago, and was finally able to wrap them all up this week.
These are the same size as a Loveless NYS.

These aren't all of the steps, but it is a lot of them.
Here are some progress pics.

Fresh out of the Liquid Nitrogen soak.

Edges and tangs scribed.

Rough ground.

Tangs tapered and clips ground in.

Handle scales drilled and blades acid washed.

All epoxied up.

Flattened up and ready to bring scales flush to tang.

Bringing the scales flush to the tang on my favorite grinder.

Rough shaped and ready for hand finishing.

Finished pics in the next post!!!

Here are the finished pics...

Everyone requested vertical sheaths.

Clean, man - too clean!!!!!

...you grind entirely after HT. Might have to give that a shot.

Makes me want a horizontal grinder, too. Damn you! : )

Elmax sucks to grind full hard Mathew, but it is still easier for me than trying to keep everything flat otherwise. All of my carbon steel knives get mostly ground before hardening.

I built the grinder. It is basically a GIB turned on its side and modified a bit.

Beautiful work Ben. Elmax, being one of my favorite steels, makes them most appealing. I was wondering about how you managed to grind them after heat treating. Very nice. Mike

Those look incredible!

do you polish the spine all the way to the tip or is only the handle polished and the blade acid etched on the spine?

The perimeter of the blade is polished all the way around to the tip.

Beautiful work. I love the thick liners with the tapered tangs, such a nice effect.

I'm not really a fan of full tangs, but I like these............ a lot!
Nice work Ben:thumbup:

Those look nice Ben. I like the green micarta one. Cool 'in progress' pics and the group shot of them is really nice.

I want a horizontal grinder too. Very much badly. :)

Thanks very much everyone!

If you build one yourself, they are pretty cheap. Mine is basically a GIB (I had mine cut out local), turned on its side, with a few rests and mods made.
