ELUs: who is your favorite maker?

Larry,
D'em ELU's are hard to bag here in No.Va.- they've learned to adapt to an urban environment - but the effort is worth it!! They are right tasty but ours have a slightly fishy taste - don't know whether its the proximity to the ocean or Washington?

Bill
P.S. - I prefer baked over sauteed.

I just Hate always being at the End of the Line! Being the last one in line to Use the atm always maked me feel like such a target. And there are a whole bunch of Crazy ELU Hunters lurking around these parts just waiting to shoot us dead and skin us alive.

(David, some of us just can't help ourselves. We just gotta play with your Electric Light Urchestra thing. Please don't take offense. A geometry question: if we're talking about custom makers, can Two people make a Line?)

My favorite maker is Daniel Winkler. His work combines Artistry, Whimsy, and History. It appeals to my wannabe Wild side.

Paracelsus, Mystic Shaman and Satirical Punster

Favorite maker? Tim Zowada. I had a chance to talk with him and (ahem) "play" with one of his damascus utility knives at a show here in Michigan and jumped on his waiting list. Utility, schmutility. The danged thing was a work of art.

BTW, I'd rather be an end-line-user than at the end of the food chain.

Which end of the food chain Ron?

On topic: I also like PJ Tomes. And incredible human being who makes incredibly complex but simple using tools for living.

Paracelsus (at the Top of my food chain, at least for the time I have remaining before the Electric Light Urchestra stops playing my song)

Second that on P. J. Tomes - everything he does is first-rate & his Scagel style knives are absolutely gorgeous, plus he is a true Virginia Gentleman. Otherwise, Rob Simonich, Kit Carson, Darryl Ralph, Jerry Fisk, Don Fogg, Dave Ellis, Harvey Dean, Jerryl Lambert , Bob Dozier, Daniel Winkler and Pat Crawford.

Bill

P.S. Almost forgot Randy Martin, Steve Corkum.

Parc, it's the bottom end, of course.

I haven't been called a bottom feeder for nothing you know.

PS. I grew up on ELO, they rock! Thanks for the brief reminder of a simpler and more fun time of life.

have a"knife"day

i do not own many custom knives but a few months ago i had the pleasure of talking with tom mayo...i have one of his drop point hunters and i believe this is one of the finest knives i have ever seen...

Okay try to figure this choice out, Ed Fowler fixed blade and Ray Appleton folders, that's a stretch ain't it?

Hi Tom, have just found your entry on this page. American beer must blur details as much as Aussie beer. I work in my garage. My equipment is as follows; one eight inch home made belt grinder that stalls if I press too hard, one metal cutting band saw, one drill press, one home made disk sander and various files and filling jigs. The rest is elbow grease and a good eye. All this knife talk is making me thirsty, crack another keg mate. Regards Peter.

Is the one who helps me decide what I want, takes the time to ask me my hand/fist measurements, stays in touch with me and treats me like a "friend".

He/she spends time here talking, teaching and explaining what goes into making a knife and the reasons for using certain steels and alloys. He/she tolerates my "stupid questions" and helps me understand why a suggestion I make on a certain grind might not work for the applications I told them the knife is intended for.
Then when my "Friend" is done making me my new knife, I know that it goes alot deeper than just a money transaction. The knife is made by a friend for a friend and no corners are cut and nothing short of perfection is shipped.

There are just too many favorite Knife makers for me to list..........Ira

There are a great many makers that would go into my favorite makers list. To many to even get started. Even if I did I would probably have to come back and change the list every few days.

I just do not have one favorite maker, I have several as well (though I have not owned to many customs made other than a few makers). Kit Carson, Bob Terzuola, and Greg Lightfoot are my favorites. More makers will be added when I get the chance to purchase other makers' knives.

Definitely Tom Mayo.
But then again I am on his short list for a TNT! (hint, hint)

He better deliver before he falls from grace. ;)

Favorite maker - way too many to name.

Some very close friends who happen to be makers Sava Damlovac (in my avatar) and John Fitch. It goes beyond knives, I think the world of those two folks and many many more including Van Barnett, Kit, Jerry Hossum, Darrel, Richard and Sally Rogers, Joel Chamblin, Dellana, Tim H., Michael Vagnino, Jerry Fisk, Gene Shadley, David Broadwell, Johnny Stout, Michael Fong, Alan E. Vince and Grace Evans, George Tischborne, Matt Lamey, Matt H., Dale Reif, Ray Kirk, Pete Peterson, Bailey Bradshaw and I have left out 20 or 30.

I'd have to say from personal experience, my two favorites are Newt Livesay and Jerry Hossom. I have a few knives from other custom makers, but I've had more interaction with these two.

For the work that others turn out, I like too many to list. :)

My favorite knives are the ones I own, but if my wife dropped the hammer here would be the makers I'd keep..

Fixed blades: Neil Blackwood

Folders: Obenauf (6 & counting:)) For overall excellent build quality and price he can't be beat for a great user knife IMO. Have one more coming tomorrow!

If she let me keep a lot I would also go with my Marzitelli's, Terzoula, Munroe, Mayo and Reeve's (hey you never said favorite "Custom";))

I own knives by many makers. All excellent in their own right.

BUT...you guessed it...Tom Mayo, folder or fixed.

Folders....DDR,L.Davidson,Bradshaw,Shadley,Rogers (there are more but I'll stop).

Fixed....Favorite is Hossom, up next Blackwood,Brend,Broadwell, etc
