Hello guys,

I think this post would be appropriate for this forum if not please put it were it belongs and accept my apologies.

There will be a lot of peole knowing Keith Lunders from K & M industries who makes the K & M Brass Matchsafe that was sold by Cabelas up until around end of june 2003.

Cabella-matchsafe.jpg

Cabelas then changed to an Aluminum copy of the K & M Brass Matchsafe that are made in Taiwan and seem to be poor quality.

As Keith helped me last July (2003) getting an new button compass as mine was all tilted I know that he is a hard working person and together with his wife runs his small business.

Keith received calls from "upset" customers who bought these cheap copies from Cabelas and were disappointed and they seem to also have posted this disappointment on "forums".

Well to make a long storry short Keith sstill had my email address and send me the email that I pasted below:

Hi Piet;

Glad I didn't lose your e-mail!
We've had two people call us in less than a week who got matchcases from Cabela's that were made in Taiwan. Both were very upset and one guy got on an internet chat room where someone had posted messages that we had sold our company to someone who was having them made in Taiwan. The chat room information also said that they were Silva. Neither "fact" is true.

We are waiting on a new compass design from Silva as we were having trouble with the old style one. Until the new one is available we are out of production - probably sometime mid-summer.

When we talked before you said you were going to post information in a chat room about our matchcase. Since I don't know how to get into chat rooms nor how to find the right one for matchcases I'm asking for your help with this.

Thanks; Keith

I don't have any "ties" with Keith nor do I get financially better from posting I only think that Keith message should get read by you guys and I never would have thought that I would say it but I think, you should wait buying a Matchcase, if you were thinking about buying one of the copies from Cabelas and get one from Keith instead, they are worth the wait, great quality and they are American made so you support your own hard working fellow Americans.

Those look perfect to put some money, a few bandaids into for edc.

Piet do you know where these will available? Directly from the company?

Thanks,

DaveH,

As Keith the owner of K & M the maker of the original Brass matchcases wrote, they have a production stop right now, waiting for better redesigned button compasses, they expect to start production in the summertime.

You can contact him directly by email, send me n email and I'll send you Keiths e-mail address.

The matchcase also holds long strike anywhere matches without the need of cutting them to the right length.

Bit get the origianl not the Taiwan copied ones.

I've had one of the black aluminum matchcases w/compass from cabelas for a couple of years now and the black paint has considerable wear and the Brunton compass has a black liquid floating around in it making it difficult to read.

This compass has been in a vest pocket since I received it and have removed it half a dozen times. It hasn't been dropped or banged around. It is a poor product at best as far as quality control is concerned. I'd look into Keiths product if and when they become available again. Otherwise, I'd recommend passing on this product.

Those look very nice. I'd definitely pick up one or two if they were available.

DaveH,

It sure looks like the K & M Matchsafe, you could give them a call and ask who made it.
If you order it you should know as it would come in a plastic baggie together with an instructions c ard which should bare the K & M logo and also 2 spare O-rings and a spare piece of cord.

Hi All,
I've got two of those match safes:D I can't speak highly enough of their quality. And of interest to members of this forum and the self defense forum they are also MUCH better than a roll of coins!;) I speak from experience. I have mine filled with those "lifeboat matches" with the striker incased in aluminum foil.

Thanks for posting the link ;) I have been wanting to buy a couple of these for awhile and called them today. Confirmed that they are the K&M. Before I bought mine they had 25 in stock :D

I just ordered one too!

Also I received a biolerplate email from Keith, they have a waiting list for new matchsafes. As Piet mentioned they are waiting for new compasses.

It's kind oif neat that by just posting a link we created soem demand.

Thanks, Piet.

I ordered one also. The reply (non-automated) came back in less than five minutes that the item was being shipped today.

Piet - tell him to give me a call after SHOT and I'll buy a hundred or so. I've been looking for a quality product that fills this niche for a while now.

Just FYI, I received mine from foxridge outfitters today. It's a very nice quality item, a little bigger/heavier than I had expected, which is not a bad thing.

The compass works well, and I don't need to hold it perfectly level.

I'm not exactly sure how to carry it, I think I'll need a lanyard. I do actually have a suggestion, and that is that the base be left full diameter, then two holes be drilled through, one for a cap keeper line, the other for a lanyard. Like Inova does on their X5T, plus then you could use standard paracord.

Spark,

I have send Keith an email letting him know you asked him to call after the Shot Show.

DaveH,

So does it say that it is a K&M matchcase? If so, how does the cap work, press fit or threaded?

Thanks,
Paul

Yes, It's the K&M, comes with an instruction sheet, spare orings, a plastic cap for something (haven't read that yet) and some extra line.

The cap is a press fit, it's fairly firm, but you don't suspend it cap up, a tie line goes from the base up through the cap, then another line from the base out. So in effect it hangs cap down.
