Email from Khukri Rum. Interesting and good news for them.

I just came across a Japanese site of a Nepali restaurant. It said that khukuri rum is not permitted to import to Japan. Khukuri rum is made and distillied from sugar cane straightly, without regularization. Because of that, its percentage of alcohol ingredient is unsteady. Customs cannot decide tax rate, so they do not permit to import, and there are no distributer in Japan.
Red tapes are global, it might apply to US also?

From what I can see on their website, Khukri Rum is standardized, why else would they list 42.8%v/v on the info page for the rum?

I've got some friends in the grocery business, so I'm going to see what it would entail to become an importer for this product. If none of the big houses will touch it, maybe I'll have to become a distributor.

Whoops cant make a post like that without posting a pirate pic :D

Thunderchyld, we know how fast government offices work in any country... I'm not such ambitious as to become a distributer. If the US will have one, I'll buy a khukuri rum via US!

Federico, what kind, circa was the pirate guy?

WrongFriend about all I know about this guy is that he's Moro (Im guessing either Maranao or Tausug, though I lean more towards Maranao), and that his name is Abdul (or so a friend tells me). This pic is circa the turn of the century. And for this guy to be so well armed, the giant ivory hilted kris, but more importanly the lovely revolver and krag rifle, means that he was a powerful Datu. And well powerful datus only became powerful datus by their skill in war-fare, or in other words piracy.

Yeah, I guess if you're a Moro pirate, you kinda get to pick and choose how you arm yourself, dependent on what arms you liberate.

Thanx, Federico for info. Was he a Muslim? I have a little bit difficulty to imagine he has a bottle of rum in his hand....

The Moro pirate man would do against a grizzly walking down the streets of Reno with a BAR?

Arrrghh darn VB bulletin traffic ate and lost my response, and it was a good one.

Well Ill try again here. Yes Moros are muslims. However traditionally Moro interpretation of islam was what is often called folk islam. A blend of Adat (traditional law) and sharia (strict koranic law) that mitigated some of the more harsher aspects of koranic law as well as adding in traditional customs and belief. Historically there was a strong alcohol trade and manufacturing industry in Moroland. Many observers (well even in the 60s) would comment on seeing Moros drinking, and therefore labelling them as lax muslims, or unsophisticated. Also with a lack of proper madrassas it was often difficult to train many Moros in proper islam. Before the 60s very few Moros could afford to make Haj, fewer still could understand the Koran (though many could read it few knew what they were reading), etc... However, perhaps this Moro pictured would be more mindful of islam since Datus and other powerful Moros were supposedly more learned in islam than the common folk. However now there is a strong middle-eastern influence in Moroland, with the Wahabite sect strongly influencing young muslims. Which unfortunately is causing many of the youth to cry for an abandoning of Adat, and adoption of strict Koranic law. Which is unfortunate, since the Adat is traditional Moro culture, and abadoning it is an abandonment of themselves. Then again this is all above me, Im not a muslim and only trying to interpret what Ive read of accountings in the area.

As for me, if I had to go up against a bar bearing bear I wouldnt mind this guys rig:D Though realistically I think he would be sneaky, and wait till the bear got all liquored up and then get him from behind:eek: :p

Rusty,

No slander intended. Things got a little blurry what with Yvsa and Bill drinking me under the table.

I guess I'll never graduate to pirate till I can handle the rum.

:(

I'll keep practicing though!

:D
