Bad experience:

www.emergencyoptions.com

I ordered a Trailing Point Spyderco Lil' Temprance off their web site because they had a good price. ($115.00 + shipping) on 12/23/03.

On 1/6/03 afternoon I wrote the company an email to check the status of my order and included the text of the ACTUAL order confirmation in the text of my email. I had a reply when I checked my email the next morning. I was given a tracking number and told that it was scheduled to be delivered that very day. Upon checking the tracking number I discovered that it had been delivered to an address in California. I'm in Colorado.

I wrote back explaining that there must be some mistake. I got a reply by the next morning - "sorry" - they had gotten me confused with someone else that has my same exact name (  ) and that they were checking to see what had happened to MY order.

A short while later I got an email from them stating that the Trailing Point Spyderco Lil' Temprance that I ordered off their site had been discontinued and that I needed to A.) Order the leaf-point one, or B.) cancel my order. Short and to the point. No apologies.

So I canceled my order. I wonder if or when I would have found out that I wasn't going to be receiving my knife had I not written them when I did.

I really need to stop price shopping and stick with the not-great-but-fair-priced dealers I already know about that have good customer service.

You are now ready to go into the world, Grasshopper.

Yup.

Sort of like ... "But I can get it on eBay for $1, why do (YoU) sell it for $5?!” Well I sell it for 5 because I will get it to you for $5 quickly, safely, & exactly as described.

This is very timely, I was just considering placing an ordre with them today. Thanks.

We've got the big, standard online dealers, their prices are comparable and their service is consistent. We've got small online businesses that seem to run off kitchen tables, although some of them must have pretty big kitchen tables :) but the dealers are knife knuts like us, many of them joining in our discussions.

Unless you know someone who's been very happy with them, dealing with outsiders is unnecessary. I almost don't like saying this, because it makes it hard for a new dealer to get any traction, but there are ways, and it's not up to buyers to finance a new dealer's learning curve.
