I completely forgot about this story until I posted it on another forum about whether or not it's okay to use a knife for SD. So I thought I'd copy and paste it here since it was my emerson commander that saved the day.

I have a small story to tell that happened to me about 2 years ago at a gas station. First off, stupid me wanted to air up my tires after coming back from fishing at 2:00 in the morning. I had my drivers side door open and I was hunched inside my car looking for quarters when these two cars full of guys, that obviously looked like they were up to no good, pulled in and parked around the backside (which was facing where I was at). They had parked around back and were trying to get inside of the restroom right away. Well, from inside of my car I'm watching them with me still hunched in and my door still open when one of the guys starts walking towards the backside of my car. He was walking very fast (like trying to make some ground before I could see him ) and when he was finally close enough to the backside of my car I stood up and immediately reached for my right side pocket. I didn't draw my knife, but he looked at me a little differently. Then slowly made his way to the car wash which had a side door and tried to play it off that he was looking for the restroom. I looked at his hands and he had blood all over them, still having my hand at my side, I looked at him and he tried to explain the blood. Right off I knew he was lying when he started trying to smirk and started waving his hands like it wasn't a big deal. He said that he had "cut his fu**ing hand and he needed to wash up." So I nodded my head in the direction of the bathroom and told him that it was over where he had come from. It appeared to me that he was going to jump me for my car if I hadn't have stood up and reached for my knife. I drove off immediately and called the cops. The cops called me back and asked for my version of the guys story and said that all of the seven guys had different stories as to why there was blood on them so I guess the mere presence of my knife saved the day :).

Long winded story I know, but if your emerson has saved the hairs on your a$$ , feel free to let me know about it, J.

LOL, either way, it scared him enough to back off and go back to his gang of buddies.

Do you carry a handgun as well?

Glad you got lucky that time and they decided to find an easier fight...

No, I'm currently working on saving up for a simple compact pistol. Until then it's me and my commander :). Hopefully none of them read this because as far as I know they all got into some trouble cause the cops called back again and said thank you for the tip :D.

Keep stuff like this in mind when you hear gun-grabber / knife-grabber types sniveling about successful self defense being unrealistic, or violence begetting more violence. You don't have to cut anything or fire a shot to have your weapon save your @ss...deterrence works just as well.

Be it the sound of racking a pump action when someone breaks in at night, the flash of the biggest shiniest revolver you can carry without a limp, or moving your hand toward the telltale clip of your favorite edc blade in your pocket, if it works it works.

That's part of the reason I love my current edc, the P'Kal. The thing's just so solid that when I take it out of my pocket at night I really snap the thing out to hear that heavy metallic "thunk!" I'm of the opinion that every knife should operate like the bolt of a heavy caliber rifle, and the sheer intimidation of someone confidently "engaging" it like any other piece of heavy-duty, precision equipment would send any mugger/attacket/opportunist packing and make its actual use unnecessary.

costs about $600

For $400 you can get a used Glock that will not jam like the 1911 WILL.

Usually people who have to "save up" for a pistol shouldn't spend extra money for an outdated jammomatic that's prettier and tuffer. They should buy a gun that will work.

actually the newer 1911's in combination with new better designed ammo are pretty reliable, any kimber and most new colts are a long country mile from "jammamatics".

nothing wrong with glocks, i like 'em too, but 1911's are good too.

most of 'em work right out of the box now unlike prior to ~'90 or so, and like i said the ammo now is designed more with proper feeding in mind.

It wasn't the Commander that saved you. It was your own alertness, quick assessment of the situation, and calm control of the encounter.

I bet it felt good to know if you needed a knife, you had one that would do a job on him. :D

I am impressed that the police got back to you. I've called in problems from time to time - nothing like that - and although they always ask for my phone number, they never call back.

my colt has never jammed on me and I have put hundreds of rounds through it
one reson the colt is better is because it doesnt carry the gangsta persona like the glock does

not to turn this interesting thread into a "1911 vs. everything else" argument, it is not outdated, nor does a quality 1911 jam any more than any other auto.

as a firearms instructor, i have seen glocks malfunction plenty.
