Is it me or do these two knives look very much alike!
Other than the liner vs. frame lock, they look alike!
Anyone done a comparison?

Wooo! Wooo!

Step on a few toes, why don't you? :D I mentioned it on a thread about the Benchmade, and it pretty well went over like, ssshhhhhh. A couple of guys did agree with me but the Benchmade Brigade is SUUURE there was NO INFLUENCE.

Hey, Blackwood and Benchmade make great knives and no one wanted to say they'd give up the chance at such a beautiful collaboration just because someone else really designed it first. :p

GET YOUR POPCORN HERE!!!!!

Get your popcorn...........................................................

and here we go

I dunno, haven't got my 630 yet. If the handles don't match and the framelock wears prematurely, then I think Emerson will have a case against BM.

Thanks for the great laugh your post caused here. :D

hardheart:

You as well. :D :D

Heh, heh.

wolfmann601,
Mind passing that popcorn? I'll trade ya for a brewski. ;)

Similiar? Possibly, but not intentionally. How many new ideas are coming out? Most knives are similar to some other model. Comparing these two:

Commander: Liner lock
630: Frame lock

Commander: Black G-10/Ti-liners
630: Green anodized Ti-frame lock

Commander: 154CM, sharpened only on one side
630: S30V, Sharpened on both sides

In person, the 630 doesn't resemble the Commander, except for the recurved blade. But, that's not enough to call it a "rip-off" of the design.

I wonder if non-matching handles and premature liner wear can be trademarked? :D

While we're at it, doesn't the old REKAT Sifu, and the Benchmade 805 TSEK look alot alike?...Man, I KNEW there was a reason why I like the 805 so much...:D.

Hey, Wolfmann601...Quit hogging all the popcorn!.:D.:D.

Both knives are awesome. I've owned & carried a commander as the first serious EDC for a SHTF blade. I now have a torched skirmish starting an EDC rotation. Go to the US# on the Emme$son board to see the original thread about this discourse. Nothing gets settled in these heated discussions. Just strive to learn what works for you, and like grandma said, "if'n ya ain't got nuttin nice to say, then just shut the Fu@k up!"

Zudd, Your Grandma must be quite a spunky gal!

I really like my Commander. Only knife I have with the "wave." Now THAT is SWEET!

I might have to get a Benchmade 630, though. S30V is definitely a step up! Wish EKI would move up to S30V...

I'll take some popcorn, too, please.

:)

This is one road that doesn't need to be traveled again.

A good search will pop up some really good arguments on both halves of this tale.

:)

As for me? The ones who need to know already know where I stand on this issue. I would consider Neil to be not only one of my favorite knifemakers, but also a friend -- and I have the utmost respect for Mr. de Asis, Mr. Glesser, and Mr. Emerson, albeit I definitely do not know these individuals well. This has always thus been a touchy issue for me, but I think that my two-cents as a beginning knife-enthusiast are all too well documented, and need no more re-visiting. :)

:D  ;)

i find the blade to be alot bigger in ralation to the handle than the commander. also, that handle shape is alot different. i'd agree that the only real similarity is the recurved blade and the commander isn't the first to have that!

i'm not really sure why everyone wants to step up and make a statement against the 630. i guess they really must have done something right. it's alot like the sabenza in that respect. if you make a near-perfect knife then i guess it raises controversy.

hopefully that's all i have to add to this discussion....

I do believe, this is the one and only reason. Just say a perfectly buildt framelock for less than $ 200,00.

But, i wouldn´t try to convert those, who won´t buy it because of the similarities, the holes and anything, anybody may throw against this knife. All those leave enough 630´s for us to buy. :D :D

i was one of the naysayers after i saw it at the Shot Show because i thought it was too big to be useful. now i'm a proud owner because its so darn beautiful. it is nearly perfect. it's even alot more managable of a size than i thought. now that i think of it....

it's a travesty. it's got holes and framelocks and recurves. it's a knock-off of everything. send them all to me so i can melt them down and throw them at benchmade. while your at it...mail me every knife that is similar in any way to a knife that came out before it and i'll take care of them too. every knife must come from a knifemaker who lives in a cave and comes up with un-adulterated original ideas that are in no way influenced by others. down with cool knives! they must be stopped. bah-humbug....

dry up. by it or pass. just leave it alone.
