Hi ppl!

I'm SERIOUSLY thinking about getting myself an Emerson Commander.

I would like to hear from anybody out there who owns one, as to how the knife feels in the hand compared to other folders, how good the steel is, the finish, etc...

Comparison would be great, if possible.

The knife looks pretty cool, and I just need some positive feedbacks on this knife for me to justify purchasing it, or not.

Thanks!

If the Gods of knifedom decreed that I could only have one folder ,it would be my black blade part serrated commander. It locks up tight as a drum and feels great in the hand.It also stays sharp and the recurve cuts through anything. The wave feature makes it faster than auto,if carried in the right front pocket. I lubed the pivot with Chris Reeves teflon grease and it opens inertially with just a flick.Didn`t mean to gush, but it is my favorite knife.
Hope this helps,

Hi David!

Yes, it helped..

It helped make me drool... hahahaha..

I've heard some things about it, almost all positive, yet I seldom see it being mentioned around. I wonder why??

It's in ATS-34, right?

Thanks!

Dan

The blade is ATS 34. I have one in black plain edge that I carry all the time. I rarely get to use it on anything but I like having it in my pocket. It is super fast to deploy once you get the hang of the wave feature. The handle feels great in the hand, and reminds me a little of the AFCK.
The only negative things I have heard on the forums is that the recurve blade is a little hard to sharpen, and that the point lacks thrusting power.

Hmmm.. I think the design of the blade had slashing in mind, so the lack of thrusting power shouldn't worry me a bit.

How does it fare when it comes to cutting up stuffs? I wonder if the ATS-34 used on the Commander is tempered accordingly, or a little too hard like the Benchmades.

As to sharpening the recurve, yes it does look a bit of a challenge to sharpen that.

But with Joe T.'s FAQ on Sharpening, that shouldn't pose a problem as well.

I played with Sparks at the Blade Show, I liked it. Th wave is a pretty coll feature, and the blade shape seemed pretty agressive

I have had a few of the Commanders and over all, I liked it. I had some little problems with each knife that made me want to trade for something else. If I find one that doesn't have any problems, I will have another.

I have heard many stories about the blade design and its intended purpose. The two stories I hear the most, it was designed as an all purpose folder for the military, in case of emergency. The other was that it was designed as a "sentry removal tool". While I am not an expert on the removal of sentries, the blade looks like it would be perfecy for that. Apparently, the reason that the design was dropped for general distribution for either purpose was there was no real need to carry another specialized tool. If someone knows the real story, I would love to hear it.

Whatever the real story is, it is still a great design. Whether it is truly functional is pretty much secondary. The knife keeps the eye happy. It is one of the few designs that keeps that "cool" look for a long time. Which keeps you wanting to carry it.

I haven't seen the back of the Commander anywhere, so I don't know how low or high the clip rides to the end of the handle. Can someone give me an idea of how it low it sits in your pocket?

Thanks,

If ya want to drool over a pic. of the Commander, there is a full-color, full-page pic. of one in the August Blade.
Heck, it's practically a poster!!!
I'd cut it out and hang it up on a wall, but I couldn't bring myself to do that to my wonderfull glossy Blade!

I had one I thought it was the coolest with the wave opening device I just couldn't bring my self to use it as for fit and finish couldn't get a better production knife IMHO

The Commander is a terrific knife. Fast opening and well made, but it is not the best production knife when it comes to fit and finish, IMO. Microtech has Emerson beat by a mile. I think the Commander is Emerson's best production piece, but mine wasn't "all that" once I started noticing minor cosmetic flaws. Still one helluva design, though.

I would rate mine somewhere above excellent in every area.

It is no secret that I prefer a re-curve blade and this is the best of its type in a folding knife that I have found.

By the way … if you were trying to purchase one at the Emerson booth at the show and they were out … it’s because I got the last one.

I also like the Microtec’s …

Combat Talon is the best of the best …

I have a Commander. The feel of the knife in MY hand is ten times better than the AFCK(which I also have). I bought it because it was the "coolest" knife I had seen in a long time. I do have one problem, though. There is a small amount of side to side play in the blade pivot. But I contacted Emerson knives by e-mail and they told me to send it back and they would repair or replace it, no problem. It will be in the mail any day now.

Hmmm.. From what I've gathered up here so far, it's a hit and miss thing with the Commander, in terms of quality and finish.

Reminds me of the Benchmade.

But, for the price that they're asking for ($200++) don't you guys think that they should pay more attention to the quality of the knife itself? Fit and finish-wise.

Didn't it recently won the Knife of the Year award at the recent Blade Show?

I'm wondering what it had over the EDI Genesis (which won last year).

Oh yeah, I have yet to see someone comment on the slicing ability of the Commander, and its edge-holding ability as well.

Anyone?

Thanks!

Dan

PS. It's really great to have BFC around, specially when it comes to investing on knives.

One can really make a good decision based on other people's experiences.
