I purchased a Emerson CQC-13 Satin awhile ago. When it arrived, about 3/32 of the very tip was burnt from grinding. It was very noticeable, almost black in color, in stark contrast to the satin blade. I called Emerson to inquire about the tip, and was told that it was ok, nothing to worry about. Not wanting to be a pian in the ass, I accepted that. I have used it this way ever since.

I have been asked to see the knife exactly three times. One guy was a pretty knowledgable knife guy, and his first question was 'what happened to the tip?'. Explanantion ensued. The second and third times happened yesterday. I was using it at my camper, and both my brother-in-law and my father asked to see it at different times of the day. Their only question about the knife? What happened to the tip? Explanation ensued.

I paid $175 for the knife, explained the flaw to the manufacturer, told me it was ok. And now I have to explain to every person that looks at it whats wrong with it, and let them know it came from the manufacturer that way.

Pure and simple, now I feel like a sucker. No more Emersons for me.

So how does the knife perform? How are the ergonomics? Is it sharp and able to cut things?

Dewd--- When you are not satisfied with a product, you tell the company what you want, in this case a new knife. I'm sure Emerson would have taken care of you.

There seems to be a lot of threads about quality control problems with Emerson knives lately. I don't own an Emerson yet, but I pre-ordered a combo edge mini cqc-15 at an online retailer. It should be back in stock next week, but now I'm wondering if I should cancel my order. I see people complain about all manufactures but it seems like Emerson Knives have a much higher frequency of complaints and unsatisfactory responses customer service.

My son and I just received two PE Mini CQC-15s. They were perfect. I would definitely stay with your order.

I say you should call them again and send them a picture of the burnt tip. See if they can fix it. I'll probably stick with my pre-order with the CE mini cqc-15. I haven't seen any complaints regarding any of the 15's. Hopefully mine is perfect. I plan on sending mine to Mr. Reese Weiland as soon as it arrives to get a framelock conversion done. Hopefully EKI handles the situation for you.

- I am a new Emerson owner (CQC-10 and Combat Karambit) and they both arrived in perfect condition. I don't have any complaints about the build quality or materials. I agree that it's a little disappointing to see QC problems appear when they should have perfect knives for what they paid. The other problem is that most of the complaints that you find online are from people who have issues. Most people that don't have issues will not post at all.

OP, I agree that you should send a picture to Emerson and see what they will do for you.

The knife serves it's purpose. THe lockup is way deep, and I can't close it one handed, but I have decided that is a good thing. It holds an edge, and comfortable in the hand. Performance of the knife is without question.

I expected a perfect knife. I will say that looks don't mean as much as performance, but the fact I have had to explain the flaw seriously bothers me. I didn't push it with Emerson, but maybe I should have, and just sent it in and said deal with it (or sent it back to the dealer).

I'll see if I can get a pic up tomorrow.

Yup. Sandpaper or the first few sharpenings generally do it. I wouldn't go through long explanations, either. Just tell them it's no big deal.

Just use the knife and get it nice and marked up then you won't see it any more and neither will any one else. :)

I don't know how bad yours was, but my new Mini Com came to me looking like this

As Esav said, after a few sharpenings, it disappeared and the knife has performed flawlessly from day one. I would say don't sweat it too much, but if it really bothers you, you can:
1. Send it back to EKI to fix/replace
2. Hit it with a stone/sandpaper/file
3. Send it to Tom Krein for a regrind :D:thumbup:

Nice. Billy.
I can dig what to OP is saying. We knifeknuts tend to be perfectionists, or crazy, or both. :D
I returned a knife with a burnt point that I bought from AG Russell and they gladly replaced it.

I've bought 4 Emersons and all came perfect. Yes, they need to be broken in and maybe wiped down but that's part of the fun.

I think if you had asked for a swap they would have done it. Emersons customer service is excellent.

Seems a little silly to be concerned with what someone thinks of the appearance of your tools.
"Hey, can I borrow your screwdriver?"
"Sure."
"Oh man, it's got a dark spot on the shank... what happened to it???"

What?
