Hello everyone, I am thinking of buying a HD-7 for deployment again. The only Emerson that I have ever owned is the cqc-7A. I shipped it to my nephie when he went off to play in the sand in Iraq. Now it is my turn again (2nd time) and I plan on takeing several folders with me. I currently carry a cold steel voyager and a benchmade stryker. I know that emerson puts out a really good knife but is the HD-7 worth the money. Any advice would greatly be appricated, one last thing where can I get the best price on one if I decide to buy one. Thank you in advance for your help. Semper Fi

i think it is worth it, but it is totally subjective.

the higher cost over the cqc 7 is likely based on the fact that titanium is so much harder to work with than g10.

both the HD7 & the CQC12 are worth it imho, i do prefer the '12 to the HD7 i like the blade shape better and the '12 is almost a "V" grind so imho it would be a better utility knife than the '7, not that the HD7 is bad, mind ya.

The HD 7 is absolutely worth every penny you pay for it :D

:jerkit:

Not only would I say it is worth it, but it is the only way to but an Emerson, HD that is. Their standard linerlocks are paper thin.

email sent- I got one in a trade- think its great except I'm not a huge fan of chisel grinds...it is an incredibly well built knife...

I wanted to thank everyone for posting there opinons. My wife knew that I was looking at this knife so last week she gave me a little box with a Emerson HD-7 inside. It really is a great knife this is one knife that I will not be passing on to anyone. Semper Fi

Just got back from working with Blackwater Security for almost a year.Make sure you bring a good fixed blade also.
Good Luck and Thanks for everything

what brand??

FWIW EKI liners work just fine now, pre '00 there was some problems, but those were corrected yrs ago. my custom '6 & '8 both have liners the exact same thickness as a production EKI does right now,

EKI liners are no thinner than BM, spyderco, kershaw, MT, crawford custom knives, or any others i can think of.

but anyway, what specific brands are ya speaking of?? oh and i do mean liner locks NOT frame locks.

More to the point - there are exactly ZERO cases of liner failure on Emerson folders since the factory opened in 1997.

Sorry Folks....Had a failure with my Comander....The liner walks open in the locked position. This happened while removing the knife after it had binded in some 2 inch cardboard that I was cutting to show off the cutting abilities of a superior knife. Darn near cut my finger off. Sorry no more liner locks for me.

And I've had failures with my Benchmade AFCK. Luckily I didn't even cut myself. But does that mean all liner locks, or in this case EKI's are crap? Not in my book. It only means that at some point they may fail to engage. Maybe. Depending on various factors. Possibly. Just like anything else man made.
I'm sure even my Sebenza or CQC12 can fail if the conditions are just right.... or just wrong. However you want to look at it.

No it does not mean all liner locks are crap or that all Emerson knives are crap. I was originally a huge supporter of the liner lock and I own alot of them. My Comander did not fail to engage as you responded in your message. The lock did in fact engage. As I said the lock walks if presure is put on the spine of the blade. (the lock FAILED) I have seen this trait in other well known brands such as Benchmade and Spyderco. It is curious to see how defensive someone gets when they assume that someone is picking on their pet brand. (No matter what that brand is)
In defense of my Comander, it had been my EDC for at least five years and the action has been cycled more times than you could imagine.

I have also retired a REKAT SIFU with a roller lock that is no longer reliable.
Ooops now I've offended a REKAT fan!

The fact is I am just very careful with liner locks and will not depend on one for SD. Just my opinion.

I originally responded to this thread because it seemed there was a prevailing attitude that no Emerson would dare ever fail. That's OK though because you will see the same attitude with supporters of other manufacturers also.

oh dont get me started on REKAT sifu's and the "lock of the 21st century" lol.

EKI liners work just fine, but no ones liners are 100% fail proof, everyone has some with probs, its a small % though imho.

some of the very best folding fighters made are liner locks (ie crawford kasper and perfigo, emerson CQC8 ) so they will work for SD imho, but no they are not as strong as framelocks/compression locks/etc. microtech liner locks to name one production brand are also fairly well regarded by most, BM and EKI and spydie too.

i would take a well fitted liner lock over a REKAT rolling lock any day of the week and 2X on sunday though.

heck when i 1st started checking out this forum liner locks were the bomb, hasnt been that long ago either.

I think I said this somewhere before but 2 out of my 3 Emersons are out of rotation due to lock slip. I still use my P-SARK for yard work but the SOCFK is just plain unsafe to use, period. The 7A is my only Emerson I can trust, but even still I check it for lock slip regularly.

Hmm... Who's being defensive? LOL.

I chose an incorrect term for the lock "walking" and instead said it did not engage. Any lock can fail, and I'm glad you agree. No one here is saying that an Emerson will never fail. It's man made, and can fail just like any other thing. That's just the way it goes. You can carry whatever you like. But in the context of the OP's post, is the HD-7 worth the price? My answer is yes.
