Emerson Newbie

The Commander blade, serrated, is the perfect all-around EDC blade. imo.

Yeah... I'm very partial to my mini-Commanders. They kinda blind-sided me. I was all in love with my mini-CQC15 until I traded for a mini-Comm a while back. I didn't do anything with it for a while but then I made the mistake of grabbing it to carry one day. Now I have two of them and the mini-15 just sits in the drawer.

Hello Kind Gents,

And It has been two weeks today since I purchased my very first Emerson.
It has smoothed out beautifully, just by opening and closing it.
Must say that, it is one awesome knife and hopefully a few more to follow in the future.

I have had a Super 7 tanto partially serrated for years - it a GO TO knife for sure.

Sure is SALTY,
Can't help just looking at it and handling it at the same time.
Panic will kick in when it comes to sharpening it.
I haven't a qlue "Hahaha".

Sharpening shouldn't be panic time. There's plenty of help right here on this subforum regarding sharpening Emersons.

That said, some basic truths exist and are applicable to most knives - Emersons included. high on that list is keeping the edge keen ... not letting it get too dul; stay on top of keeping it sharp with modest but frequent stropping - be it on a leather strop charged with Flitz or even diamond paste or something as mundane as a leather belt, the back of a pad or the uncoated rim underneath many coffee cups, or perhaps in your case tea cups. ;)

When more serious sharpening time comes, be careful to maintain the existing angle of the edge and use rods specially designed for the serrations. Because Emersons and just sharpened on one side, you'll just be raising a burr and gently taking it off the backside. Keeping the angle right and patience will yield satisfactory results. after that, it's just a matter of degree and some become quite obsessed in that regard.

Cheers!

Forgot to mention ... on the serrations, I've also used, freehand, the triangular sticks from a Spyderco Sharpmaker with acceptable results.

Thanks for the advice SALTY,

Seems hard work for a beginner, would of went for the plain edge if it was available at that time.
I will have to watch some videos I think, and Stropping seems to be a easier option?
The UK sucks when it comes to Emerson Knives, as the main supplier here, is still waiting
