emerson steel upgrade!!??

Yeah, what Esav said.

Lycosa-- My buddy actually has the MPF-1 and I was considering buying it from him but I wasn't impressed with it. It was partly due to the fact that it's friggin HUGE. I'm not saying I don't respect my knives but, if I drop my 7 in the mud, I'm gonna shake it off, slip it back in my pocket and worry about it when I get home. It's a hard use knife, not an heirloom.

Cool-beans Jon. Mission does make a MPF 2 that has a 3" blade. I only carry my Mission when I'm in the woods for an extended time. Otherwise it's the "7"! Later.

And Cactus, I believe A-2 will out cut 154-CM.

I second that! This is not hearsay; I am talking about personal experience: a properly heat-treated blade made out of A2 will definitely out cut a blade made of 154cm of similar blade profile. Mostly in push cutting, A2 will readily pull ahead and retain the lead due to longer lasting keenness of the steel.

Edit: I found it, crucible is american, so S30V is too since they created it.

What about Latrobe Specialty Steel Company? Aren't they located in Pennsylvania? Don't they make BG42 and DuraTech 20CV? Can 154cm be compared with any of those steels?

Back in the 80's, Phill Hartsfield told me he tried all the stainless steels and they just don't cut like tool steel. He also mentioned something that I have not forgotten--- Tool steel was designed to cut other steel. His wisdom still rings true. All the top steels go beyond the grade though, so don't get all nutty over this steel thing.

This is the ultimate answer. We all realize that certain steels are more stainless than others, some can be sharper, some tougher. But a manufacturer also factors in cost of materials and processing and familiarity with the steel as well.

Once it gets to the customer in a pocketknife or folder, the differences are much less relevent, since few ordinary users will stress any steel beyond its capabilities. Those of us who might will know where to go for the best.

So this discussion is good as it alerts new guys to the need to understand steels, but not as important in pushing Emerson Knives to upgrade from a steel that satisfies so many of its users' needs.

I have a magazine in which emerson wrote an article about tactical knives, it's about 4 months old. Within said article, he made a comment about how you shouldnt get caught up on the new, so called, "super steels" and I couldnt agree more. I dont really see why everyone is so concerned about emersons use of 154cm, it's steel, keep it sharp and use the damn thing. They all do the same shit.:jerkit:

JM--- Words of Wisdom! It all works! Get what you like! And, be good to the Earf! lol.
