hey guys i am looking to buy my first emerson. the hourseman and the mini comander are what i am looking to buy.
i have seen that emerson are excellent defense/combat folders but not too good at any utility task.
what are your opinions
Thanks
Thomas

I have a Mini A00, and it meets all my utility tasks. I don't buy knives for defence. Knives are just tools for me.

Have both, and they cut things. They cut things well. Definitely work just fine as a utility knife, I bought them with that intention in mind and I have no complaints.

I haven't encountered any tasks that I felt were significantly more difficult with an Emerson than with my other folders. They aren't the most refined slicers, but if you really feel the need for that it's easy to pair one with a small Opinel for things that might require a thinner blade.

The 10 is a great utility knife. Give it a try it has a good all-around use blade shape and is just the right size.

There are definitely conflicting opinions about Emersons, but I doubt too many people would say they're terrible utility knives. Personally, I feel like they should either up their level of fit and finish, use better blade steel, or reduce the prices, bu they work perfectly well.

I own a horseman and it's a great little knife! Not so much little but skinny. Still it cuts things and cuts very well. I love the blade shape on the knife.

Agreed. Despite my whining about Emerson, I own that little guy's great big brother because I love the blade shape and ergos.

For utility tasks, you cannot go wrong with the Journeyman. If it's a utility blade that you seek, look no further. Just do a search for the Emerson Journeyman and read the reviews and feedback -- not only here on the Forums but on Google. I really like all my Emerson blades but one stands above the rest as a utility knife and it's my Journeyman.

the journeyman is a bit too expensive for this time around but hey i need some room to upgrade. i think i am going to ether get the mini-commander or the horseman because they fit into my $150 price point. any other ideas?

I think the Horseman is a great utility knife. Works for me. I consider my 8 a bigger utility knife.
Cheers

Good advice here. I am wanting to pick up a CQC8. Emerson himself has suggested the Journeyman, as has been alreay mentioned.

I have had a Commander previously, and while I really liked the LOOKS of the blade, I found it lacking for "everyday" chores (opening letters, opening small delicate packages, boxes, etc.) I know Mr. Emerson didn't DESIGN it for those chores but I'm suspicious of those who always blurt our "Commander!" for those looking for utilitarian chores and EDC. Draw cuts, yeah, but delicate or "insertion" cuts that have to be precise, NOT SO MUCH.

The CQC15 might be a better compromise, but I haven't had one in hand.

My mini-CQC15 is the perfect utility carry for me. Handles stuff in the warehouse and around my house just fine.... better than most other folders I have. Easy to sharpen, tough blade steel, holds an edge pretty well, takes on natural materials like shrubs feed bags, and wood as well as it does zip ties and computer cable insulation. Most days that I use it, all I have to do is strop the edge to get it right back.

- I agree. The CQC-10 is my favorite Emerson design. The blade shape is excellent for utility task and the chisel edge is very easy to sharpen and maintain an edge.

i think i am going to get the houseman because i like the blade shape and it fits in my price range, thanks for all of your opinions

I own the mini commander and its a great utility blade, perfect size and good ergos like most Emerson's I've come across.
