In programming my pyrometer the other day , it occurred to me that the subject of emissivity setting is discussed, but what those settings are isn't.

What do you chaps set the emissivity scale on your IR gun at for:
Austinitizing carbon blade steel - 1984,1095, W2 at approx 1500°F
Austinitizing stainless steel - CPM154, CPM S35VN, 440C at approx. 1900°F
Tempering of carbon steel at approx. 400°F
Tempering of stainless steel at approx. .400°F

I have to plead guilty of just leaving it at .80 most of the time.

One of my posts I linked to a chart of settings,

It does make a difference, but It's too involved to change the settings, so I go default most of the time too.

I make up for that by shooting the oven walls rather than the steel itself.
I assume with soak times and even colour that I am at the same temp in the steel as in the oven.

here the chart is
2 pages, not so obvious

It lists brick fireclay as .75 or .85 so I'm willing to "good enough" that to the default settings.

I asked a rep from the manufacturer of my IR gun what range would be best for carbon steel in the neighborhood of 1500F, was told that their engineers recommend the .5 to .7 range.

Yes, the charts can be confusing. I have been tempted to drop my setting lower, but haven't done it yet. I might try .60 and see how it calibrates on coupons with Templi-stix at 1500F.
