Has anyone here worked for someone who issued you a pocket or fixed blade knife the first day on the job?

Yes. For the Coast Guard, I received (at least at my unit) a Myerchin pocket knife. They turned out to be pretty low quality (the locks were really unstable and the knives rattled when closed). We returned several to the factory, and then ordered Spyderco Atlantic Salts to replace the Myerchins. When Spyderco came out with the Rescue H1, we ordered those as well.

Mine was a no name China multiblade camp knife. There were a couple in the company truck. One in my pocket a few around the shop/office. It was a short job servicing ground contamination cleanup units. Lots of tools and heavy mechanical work. I also tested the monitoring wells, used a knife to cut fish line and heavy syphening hoses. Best thing about the knife was it had the office phone number on it. Till I got a cell phone I used the pay phone to call in, phone # on knife was handy. The Knife wasn't very good, I always made sure I had a good easy to operate knife of my own with me. Needed to use it in cold weather wearing latex gloves and leather gloves. When testing monitoring wells you had to keep from contaminating the samples Also used one of 3 personal knives I carried while working for this co. Leatherman PST II, Schrade 340T or another choice of the day knife. Working with tools, in a pickup truck, in foul and fair weather, with KNIVES is the best. Made me feel useful, especially good when you get a pay check too.

After I joined the Navy, my first sea duty was on a submarine. After I got aboard, the cook issued me an electrician's knife (spear and screwdriver/wire stripper blades with wood scales) complete with fancy leather sheath. I wondered why the cook was issuing this, since it certainly wasn't in his job description. Then I found out how real life in the seagoing Navy works - By judicious application of 5 lb. cans of coffee, the yardbirds in the local Navy Yard gave the cook whatever he ordered, and then he distributed them - knives, personalized belt buckles, decent metal polish, etc.

No one has issued me knives, but I have given many to our employees, they are tools in which they need to work, cutting rope, plastic shrink wrap, plastic banding, opening boxes, etc. Some like the folding box cutters with replacement blades and others prefer slippies. Does not matter to me as long as the work gets done.

I got one for Christmas last year.... Has the company name and the year on the blade... Direct from China. It is a really cool looking blue color though.
Still in the drawer, probably still be there next year too.

When I started working for the Postal Service, they gave out ring knives to anyone who wanted one. They also kept small fixed blades on the cut-open tables. These were like paring knives with wood handles and high carbon blades.

Not the first day on the job, but my current employer has issued me a bunch of Gerbers, Oakley sunglasses, sure fire lights, seat belt cutters, an IBA, an M-16A2, and a whole bunch of immunizations;) Flight crews get Ontario aseks, some people also got issued Benchmade and Gerber Emerson autos.

Not on the first day, but after commissioning my power plant we received Buck 110's and later on Leatherman Waves. Break it or lose it, and they replace it for you.

small mora fixed blades, I used to issue them to the deck hands on my previous life. We used to leave them with the guys but lately they had to be returned to the Bosun in the evening to be locked up. Bought also some leatherman, mag lites and decent folders as presents for the best workers.

Both my wife and I were given SAKs with the company emblem embossed on them. We worked for different companies, too.

I gave my guys multi-tools sans emblems for a particular job well done. They seemed to appreciate the gesture.

Last year everybody at my workplace received a 'Leatherman' which was really a made in China copy with the company logo on it. The main blade was literally as dull as a butter knife. I gave mine to a co-worker who said he could give it to his son.

Another guy told me that his broke the second day he had it.

My Boss has given me several knives on the job. They are never anything fancy usually traditional pocket knives that are not very expensive. Despite carrying my own blade (Swiss Army Huntsman), I still get tossed a blade.

I have always provided my own cutlery. I wish more employees issued knives though they are too handy not to have.

worked for a wholesale flower company that gave us all small single bladed wenger's with sheepsfoot style blade. they were slipjoints with red rubbery feeling handles.

While in High School, I worked as a stock clerk & we had piles of razor box cutters everywhere. Every pair of pants & jacket had at least one ot two in the pockets. Nobody ever gave you any crap about it either.

lucky you, I work for the postal service, but not at a post office, it at a mail rom for ym community, I was "issued" lol a box cutter, but never got a ring knife, but I know what your talkign about, they sre advetised for cuttign twine and stuff...

I never took a ring, actually picked up a couple but gave them away. I always had my own good knives. The rings were cool, but the oldtimers also taught us how to break twine without cutting it. Quicker.
