Is it just me or are you tired of seeing "EDC Recommendation" or "Survival Knife Recommendation" threads about three or four times a week? I believe this is partly due because the search function has been disabled for non-paying members.

As you know, most members (and especially newbies) are non-paying so when they have a question they must start a new thread about it instead of just performing a search. As a result of this, we see many many repeat threads about the same topic or about the same knife over and over again.

I remember seeing the same threads back when search was enabled as well but not nearly to the same extent as now. I think the forums are getting a bit cluttered with repeat threads. Anyway, just my opinion (and yes, I am a paying member).

Go to Google. Enter

EDC Recommendation site=www.bladeforums.com

Problem solved. Partly.

Okay, maybe you guys aren't understanding me completely. First of all, I am indeed a paying member I just don't feel the need to have a corny avatar or some kind of lame motto or quote under my name.

And as far as the google search thing, that is fine and dandy but unfortunetly when people enter the forums (especially newbies) they are not thinking about going back out to Google and typing whatever the correct formula is for searching within this site. As evidenced, they start new threads when there are already a ton of threads on the same exact subject/knife but they simply cannot reach those threads because the search is disabled.

Yes, you are right. Some people suck at the internets. Using Google to search within a particular sight is not difficult nor advanced.

I've been a member of several other forums for many years, with tens of thousands of posts. I have notice something...no matter how many search options you give people, no matter how many stickies about a subject you have, a bunch of newbs (make that noobs) still ask the same questions over and over and over.

Then, when some people take it upon themselves to tell the noobs to use the search button and/or read the stickies (which would answer their question) the noobs get all upset about it and other forum members start calling the members who mention search "search nazis". Every time. And you are no better off.

That is the nature of internet message forums/boards.

Searching creates a lot of stress on the servers and uses up bandwidth. Bandwidth isn't free and if Spark wants to keep operating this place without any ads then some features have to be pay only.

So is this thread about USERS having trouble searching
or being a paying MEMBER and not wanting "a corny avatar or some kind of lame motto or quote under my name" ?

Seriously, what does this have to do with knives?

I do not think the noobs are going to use the search function. The "high" one gets of starting a thread- dumb or good is waiting to see resulted posts to their thread. It strokes our cyber ego. IMO they are neophytes trying to earn their wings and testing the waters with a "safe" question in their eyes. If they are gently told that there are numerous posts of that topic, they can then decide to do some manual searches by going back a few pages. I pick and choose what posts I want to read, and skip over the clutter. BF is still my special place, and I welcome noob posts, they have to start somewhere. I was granted grace, so should they.

We been there. We done that. We didn't like it.

Searching used to be open to all users. Searching uses up a lot of resources. It affected response time. Spark now limits searches to paying members and response time has improved.:thumbup:

I'll take repeat questions but improved response time over no repeats and lousy response time.

johnnyt16, if you please ...

1) I have moved this from the General Knife Discussion to Service & Support, where we discuss Bladeforums technical issues.

2) See the Announcemen at the top of the Service & Support forum, Search is down for non-paying members.

3) Go to your User CP and down the left side to Membership Groups and click on your correct Membership level.

Thank you.

Esav, I don't think he's complaining about his searching, but instead that newbies can't search and ask questions that have been addressed before. It' sounds more like a rant than anything constructive. Spark already knows about these things, and he feels that no search for non payers is the best way for most.

Jonny you chill please also..

as a member who has been here forever I can say that when the search function was for non paying members we had just as many people posting for recomendations...directions,, how to...as we do now. Search will not be enabled for non paying members. That is the way it is..nothing can be changed ..this is sparks sandbox he lets you play in it..

BTW just so you know..a person with around 200 posts in my book is still a noob...but enjoy yourself here..its a fun place...

Proven wrong about you being a paying member?
I didn't bother to click your name to see if you had PM capability or not.
I didn't click because I didn't care.
I almost didn't click this thread because it's been asked so many times.
It just sounds like you're too lazy to skip a thread where the same questions gets asked over and over.
Just go to the next thread, it's not that hard. You don't have to click each one and waste your time.
Good luck.

Not surprising. Like I said, thats just the way it goes, no matter what board/forum you are talking about.
